i need a compass for a hiking trip, any idea where i can buy a compass in downtown bangkok? specific locations welcomed.

Any of those street stalls selling nightsticks, binoculars etc or the same type shops in MBK sell them.

A decent quality compass can be found in the camping shop in CentralWorld. Coming in from the skywalk take the first up escalator and it is right there.

Bottom two floors toward the back of Amarin Tower next to Erawan Hotel just off Ploenchit BTS has a whole series of camping/outdoors/survival type equipment shops, pricey but good quality.
