I have my Filipina gf with me so we wlll be going together. Would like to stay over in Cambodia a few days and let her do some shopping there. I am trying to get her passport to have a few more stamps so I think that would a cool little trip. Any help would be great. Thanks

easy,

check out any travel agencies they all offer bus tickets

u have the choice to go to Poi pet ( I drove that route in August) , 4 1/2 hours to border and than another 2 to Siem Rep or 6 to Phnom Penh via Battambang)

or via Trat to Koh Kong and than either head south to Shinoukville (pattaya to shv apx 6 1/2 hours)

or go same way an make the rutn to Phnom Penh about same time

IF ur in Pattaya there is NOTHING to shop for in Cambodia u cant get in Pattaya excpet cheap tourist stuff

what about coming back from Cambodia (phnom penh) to Pattaya? which company would be good to do this?

There are buses, more or less the same as the ones that goes from Pattaya to Phnom Pheng. On the boulevard, that is the road alongside the river you find travel agents that have information about those. I also recommend you to stay in that area. Many hotels and guesthouses and the beer (draft ankor) is good and cheap.

For shopping take a motorcycle taxi to the Russian market, that is the place, not the central market, much more expensive. You need USdollars in Cambodia. ATM's gives you these, so no local money. Remember you have to bargain everywhere!!!

Have a nice trip

Sorry, but i have the experience that the Russian market in Phnom Penh is much cheaper than anything here in Pattaya. 100% cotton shorts only US$ 5 (where can you find these in Pattaya for Bath 150???)

Also the socalled 100% cotton polo shirts here are made in China, and never 100% cotton, even if they mention that on the label. In Cambodia they are really 100% cotton, because they are produced there.

Where can you have a draft beer here for US$ 0,80??? In Seam Reap even US$ 0,50. Also the people are much, much more friendlier in Cambodia than here in the so-called LOS

There is only one boulevard, right?

I am traveling through malaysia (penang). Plenty of money exchangers here near Chulia Street (Georgetown), and I was planning on exchanging for USD at least for the Cambodia visa and for the Vietnam visa. Should I just exchange all USD here or are there places in cambodia to do this?

So I guess I'd actually have to pay for 2 visas to cambodia? as if I go to vietnam, I cannot reuse the same cambodian visa, correct?

jacquesparra. Don't know where u get ur info or how long u spent in Cambodia but i lived there and go up frequently and have been to all the markets form SR to PP to Battambang to Preah Vihear to Kampot to shianoukville

and all u will find are the necessities and cheap tourist stuff ( cheap copy/second hand knock off clothes and Vietnamese souvenirs) and we were not talking about the people. I also find Cambodian people nicer than those u find around Thailand's tourist areas but if u go up north or to Essan u will find some of the nicest, most friendly people in the world.

Don't know why u say Russian is cheaper, i have found at Russian market they start higher an will give ya more of a discount an the price than comes out the same as Central market

I don't drink $.50 draft Beers either :-)

You DON'T need $us dollars and can use Riel but most people do use $ an all small change less than a $ is giving in Riels ( the local currency)

ONLY place u bargain is the market.

rest/bars,/hotels/Mall (sorya mall) are all set prices

Wrong, many many boulevard's but only one riverside road

Don't charge ur money before u arrive, There are plenty of money changers near the market an u can use any atms to get $$. they usually charge for the service and check with ur local bank before u go what they charge

YOU do need pay for ur Cambodia visa in $$ or baht ( but Baht they charge u more than the real equivalent)

Cambodia does not issue a multi entry tourist visa so if u go to Cambodia than over to Vietnam ( u need get that visa in advance as no visas on arrival but u can apply in advance online and pay for it an they issue u a peper which u present when u arrive and than they stamp ur passport) and than back to Cambodia u will need to purchase another visa ($20 each). There is no free entry as Thailand has either.

Why not fly from KL to Saigon and than come back overland?? saigon-pp-bangkok an than train back down to Malaysia

ok. I pulled out too much riggit at the ATM here. I probably won't be pulling out any USD anytime soon.

For vietnam, would you recommend taking USD or THB there? can I get by with USD, or will I have to convert into viet dollars?

and the online visa doesn't apply to people entering vietnam via land border. maybe cambodia at certain places, but vietnam the eVisa is only for airport arrivals. Everyone else that is not visa-exempt must get a visa from a consulate.

u will have to change to Vietnamese currency ($1- 20,850 Dong) once u arrive

Cambodia is the ONLY country in Asia i have been to that takes $$ (i mean as a currency, not at money changers)

IF the evisa system only works at airport do as i mentioned and fly in and go home overland :-) or fly to Saigon , overland to Phnom Penh an fly from there back to KL

The times i traveled to Vietnam i always had a visa from the embassy in PP ( u can get one in shianoukville as well in a day!!)

The bus company I used from HCMC district 1 to Phnom Penh wanted an extra $5 'stamp fee'. I saw everyone else hand over the extra $5 as if it was no problem. it and I didn't argue too much myself, and there was no problems with getting the visa issued: the driver/attendant did in fact take care of everything. Just needed to get fingerprints and they put the entry stamp in there. Too bad the visa takes up a whole page. <deleted>? edit: no checking of any luggage at customs from vietnam to cambodia. Similar to going from Malaysia (penang) to Thai (Hat yai).

On the Vietnamese side, I don't remember looking at the exit official. The driver just called out the persons name as their exit stamp was completed and we walked out to the bus for a brief shuttle to the cambodia side.

Should I have refused to pay the $5? It was Phnom Phen Sorya Transport.
