Cost To Transfer Motorcycle Title

Recommended Posts

Posted

I purchased a 249cc motorcycle from its previous owner.

The title/registration/tax tax was renewed two weeks ago by the original owner.

Now I want to put the motorcycle in my name and I have the Green Book and proper sales and transfer paperwork to do this.

My question is about cost, specifically about the mandatory insurance fee.

Will I have to pay the insurance fees again, or will the recently paid renewal fee by the original owner cover me under the newly titled Green Book entry?

Thanks everyone.

"The title/registration/tax tax was renewed two weeks ago"

So it is insured/taxed for approximately another 50 weeks.

Don't know, how much the name change will be, sry!

One additional question...

Is a Resident Certificate/Letter required to change the title?

Does it need to be stamped by Immigration?

i'm fairly sure you will require a residence certificate or maybe a house book with your name in maybe ok,

residence certificates are 500 baht from immigration and to get one you will need to show proof of where your living.

is the previous owner going to help you transfer the book ? i think the previous owner needs to sign something.

you need to goto the transport office near to a bridge and the holiday inn, the office is close to the traffic lighted T junction.

i think transferring cost without having to get the tax/insurance is very cheap.

good luck

The OP did not state where he lives as different transportation offices have different requirements. The price will be around 1000thb but I highly recommend you use a service. Most motorcycle shops offer it or can recommend someone. I pay an extra 200 baht and well worth it in the time you will save plus they will tell you exactly what you. If you are in Pattaya I can recommend a good place.

did the previous owner give you a copy of his i.d card or passport also ?

you may need someones help if you don't have the required paperwork from the previous owner.

ideally you should take the previous owner to the tranport office and get them to sign the application form etc.

or get an application form from the transport office and fill it in , it's written in thai so ask them which parts the previous owner needs to fill in.

do you also have a drivers licence ? i used the one residence certificate to change the name and get a licence, the people at the transport office just took a photo copy of residence certificate and i asked to keep the original.

The fee will include a "tax" of 0.5% of the value of the bike plus about 200 baht other admin costs. So, say you bought a secondhand Kawa 250 for 100,000 you'll get hit up for 500thb tax plus extras so should come in well under 1000thb. The LTO assesses the value so no point in printing up a dicky invoice in the hope of being taxed on that.

As others have said, you'll also need 2 copies of your passport (ID page and current visa page) and I'm not sure but I don't think they are accepting tourist visas anymore but may be wrong. A yellow house book or work permit or letter of residence and the transfer papers signed by you and the seller. You'll also need a copy of the sellers passport (or Thai ID card) with their ID page and unexpired visa.

It sounds a lot and it sounds intimidating but so long as you get the transfer forms filled out, the process is pretty straight forward. When you go there, with the bike, first go to the inspectionbay with your green book, They will check the numbers and do a rubbing on masking tape and then send you to the office within the inspection bay. After that, go to the main office and go to the info desk on the left. The girl will check your papers and give you a number. Watch the screen, go to the counter, pay up and get another plastic number and go back a couple of days later to collect the book with your name in it.

Warning: do not try to change a "dodgy" book into your name in CM as you run the risk of them confiscating the bike as they are switched on to the whole grey bok thing!

Cheers,

Pikey.

Excellent response. Thank you! :)

This is exactly what I need to know.

I've been to this office (near the walkover bridge by the airport) twice now (motorcycle and auto license) so I know these areas inside the building you wrote about, and knowing the order I need to do them is really helpful as I won't have anyone with me the day I go who speaks Thai.

You're welcome.

No, the place I am referring to is in Nong Hoy - just about opposite the Hilton Hotel and the Ratuwit hospital on the CM to Lumphun road at the set of lights where the bridge crosses the river.

Cheers,

Pikey.
