Jet ski vendor arrested for 25,000 baht extortion, returns money

PATTAYA:--Pattaya police arrested a jet ski vendor who allegedly extorted 25,000 baht from an Indian tourist who allegedly scraped the side of the boat.

Pornsuphan Phoomnok, 25, was taken into custody after tourist Jaspret Singh, 34, complained to police he’d been forced by pay for alleged damage to the jet ski Nov. 3. Pornsuphan returned the money with police saying he confessed to never expecting the Indian to go to authorities.

Singh and friend Chuadet Dawan, 24, said they rented the jet ski in front of the Mike Shopping Mall and were told they’d scraped the side the boat.

"After having their money returned, the two tourists declined to press charges and the vendor was released."......and the vendor happily try his luck again in future with other tourists, the end.

Tourist Police 1, Ski Vendor 0.

If it happens often enough, maybe they will get the message and play nice?

About bloody time, maybe the vendor had forgotten to pay off the right people

Don't kid yourself that the tourist police are on the side of justice.

What a joke! In that case, if you rob a bank, and get caught, just offer to give the money back, and just say you never thought the police would catch you!

Agree, this is not even a warning. This guy will be back at it immediately and 'pick' a less strong target. This is rubbish. He should be jailed for fraud, fined - apart from paying back the money.

This is a happy ending ,but could sadly end up that way next time. This people must be jailed !

They are protecting their livelihood. These gorillas that park themselves on the beach renting jet-skis are incapable of holding down a proper job in the 21st century so they are hired by the police to commit this scam. They are happy, the cops are happy and fuc_k the tourists, there are always more where the last lot came from. Once this generation dies off, there next one is more likely to be a little smarter.

I'm shocked. Is this an April's fool joke? Maybe something is finally changing. Didn't the governer of Chonburi come here on order from Chalerm to clean things up? Crack downs on illegal taxis in Phuket, this event. Starting to look better. I hope!

If the Mayor and Authorities are seriously wanting to "stamp out this extortion problem", maybe they should erect notices along the Beach Road advising people to "thoroughly photograph" the jet ski before taking it out (and motor cycles) The tourist will then have some evidence to show the police/authorities...........and yes I know it may be inconvenient but could save a lot of problems from these racketeers, and money

I think that the jet-ski operator should have had to return the 25K, pay another 25K as recompense to the Indian, been jailed for at least a month, had his operator's license permanently revoked and all his jet-skis confiscated and crushed.

That would go part-way towards sorting out the problem.

Boy oh Boy that is gonna teach 'em .

They are never going to try that again after that incredible punishment for demanding money with intent - referred to as EXTORTION.

No charge , No Punishment , No repurcussions , NO CHANGE in the way things are done

That was not a "happy ending", I never heard of a happy ending by being attacked, and right on beach road too! One of these days, someone will be killed because of these scams, either The Thai will kill the renter or they will come across a renter that wont take their s...!

I agree 100%

Guys I thinks it's now safe to rent a jet ski!

They should be keeping his jet-ski in the evidence yard until his court case gets heard in 6 months time. Oh wait this is thailand..

I thought I read somewhere that the jet ski operators were now licensed/insured/monitored/limited by police? If this is the case then regardless of charges being pursued, the police should have the power to revoke the license?

Sorry just realized what country we are talking about, apologizes!whistling.gif

I dont think they have actually got beyond the stage of agreeing that they are going to negotiate such measures.

the bit of beach opposite/near mike shopping mall to the nautical inn is the most dangerous place on the beach to rent a ski. there are other hot spots but this is the worst.

I have seen it loads of times here, but there are many ski guys watching the passing crowds and little tree cover, observing this section of beach and getting a pic is very risky.

on my last few trips i have simply kept on walking rather than hang about !!

the next day weather permitting it would have been business as usual
