PRINCE MAHIDOL AWARD

Two doctors share prize

The Nation

The winners of this year's Prince Mahidol Award for Medicine come from Britain and Nigeria.

BANGKOK: -- Sir Michael David Rawlins was honored this year for his patient oriented treatment style, while Nigerian physician Uche Veronica Amazigo, a former director of a medical centre for prevention of blindness, won for her work in preventing the loss of sight and eradicating parasite induced blindness at community level.

The winners were announced yesterday by Udom Kachinthorn, dean of Siriraj Hospital's Department of Medicine, speaking in his capacity as deputy chairman of the Prince Mahidol Foundation. The foundation was set up in 1992 by His Majesty to mark his late father Prince Mahidol's birth centenary.

The foundation - currently chaired by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn - awards an individual or organization for making a major contribution to humanity via medicine.

Each prize comes with a cash award of US$100,000 (Bt3 million), a certificate and a medal.

Manas Srisodapol, director general of the Foreign Ministry's Department of Information as well as chair of the subcommittee for the foundation's public relations, said 75 names from 34 countries had been nominated this year. Over the past three years, an international selection committee has been making its recommendations to the Princess, but the final decision lies with her.

The award ceremony will be held in January at the Chakri Mahaprasart Throne Hall.

Vijarn Panich, chairman of the foundation's award committee, said Dr Rawlins had completed his medical training at the St Thomas Hospital in London and currently chaired the National Institute for Excellence in Medical Science and Health. He is also a leading advocate of employing verifiable data to assess the efficacy of medicine and medical instruments. His view of medicine covers the aspects of the economy, society and ethics, and he advocates health policy that is appropriate, transparent and verifiable.

Vijarn said Rawlin's work has allowed for high standard yet reasonably priced public health care across the United Kingdom.

Amazigo, meanwhile, studied tropical medicine at Bernhard Nocht Institute of Tropical Medicine in Germany as well public health at Harvard University. It is partly due to her work that parasiteinduced blindness is nearly eradicated in Nigeria and up to 40,000 cases are prevented each year.

Poisoning suspected in woman's death

The Nation

Angthong

30194870-01_big.jpg

ANGTHONG: -- A woman's death from an apparent poisoning early yesterday has been linked to a dispute with a neighbor, but police say they have not yet ruled out the possibility of suicide.

The woman's two sons also fell ill, but survived.

"We are investigating the case and looking into all possible scenarios," Angthong Police chief Pol Colonel Chudej Kongkanpai said.

Prathum Ngarmcharoen and her sons, aged 12 and 10, developed symptoms of poisoning on Tuesday. While the boys recovered, Prathum succumbed early yesterday in hospital. Her body has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine to determine the exact cause of death.

Her sons, Santi and Chaichanapon Chaiseeorn, were placed under the care of the Angthong Home for Children out of concern that another attempt might be made on their lives.

The key suspects were identified as Paitoon Ngarmcharoen, an older brother of Prathum, and neighbor Piboon Bangphanwimon.

Prior to Tuesday's apparent poisoning, Piboon had accused the boys of stealing Bt20,000 and allegedly assaulted the pair to force a confession from them. The boys insisted on their innocence, and in the end their mother lodged a police complaint against Piboon.

"Piboon will be charged with physical assault

Transport Co schedules more provincial buses at winter holidays.

By Digital Media

20121123134114-640x390x2.jpg

BANGKOK, Nov 23 - The state-run Transport Co will increase upcountry-bound buses from Bangkok by almost 25 per cent at the Dec 28-31 to cope with increasing numbers of New Year's holiday travelers and family members returning home during the festive season,. it was announced today.

Wuthichart Kalyanamitra, president of the Transport Co, said the normal 23,000-plus provincial buses scheduled on Dec 28-31 will be increased to more than 28,000 in order to serve a projected 752,000 passengers. Friday Dec 28 will likely be the peak outbound day while travelers will gradually return to Bangkok between Dec 31 and Jan 3.

Mr Wuthichart was reporting the situation to Deputy Transport Minister Prasert Janruang-thong who visited the Transport Co today to discuss additional service for bus commuters during next month's New Year's holiday period.

He expressed confidence that the increased bus service will be sufficient to serve outbound and inbound passengers who can book their tickets 60 days in advance through a 24-hour call centre number at Telephone 1490.

Mr Wuthichart said security will be boosted at the Transport Co's central bus terminal at Chatuchak by installing 12 more closed-circuit cameras while security guards will be on duty at all bus terminals operated by the company.

Traffic police will set up alcohol and drug inspection units at bus terminals to check bus drivers before taking the wheel, he said. (MCOT online news).
