Phuket axe murderer out on bail until next year

Phuket Gazette

PHUKET: -- The 15-year-old boy who confessed to killing his sleeping stepfather with an axe in August will appear before the Phuket Family and Juvenile Court on the morning of February 4 next year.

A court official told the Phuket Gazette today that after his confession to Chalong Police on August 22, the youth was remanded in the custody of the Family and Juvenile Court.

“He was granted bail, set at 30,000 baht, on October 1,” the official said.

Lt Col Boonlert Onklang of Chalong Police Station told the Gazette earlier that the youth had admitted to killing 42-year-old Prayoon Pothi with a blow to the back of his head with a hand axe.

“The accused has been charged under Section 288 of the criminal code. If the court finds someone guilty of murder they have it within their power to impose the death sentence or 15 to 25 years imprisonment,” Col Boonlert said.

Great, paltry bail for confessed axe murderers (who ought not to have bail in the first place), but typically denied to foreigners in traffic accidents. Or how about the guy locked up for shouting at immigration Phuket - no bail. Remember the numerous alleged thefts of handbags or even bar mats / towels from Patong? - Yeah lock up the foreigners for those heinous crimes. Good to see common sense and equality prevails. blink.png

This poor poor country has so far to go yet they're still jogging backwards... Such a shame.

Not 'typically denied to foreigners in traffic accidents'. That's why you have a bail bond clause in your insurance policy. But if there is a flightrisk, yes, bail will probably be denied, and rightfully so.

Ok, I'll give ya that, but the amounts just don't make sense. IRIC my insurance bail bond is around half a million. Besides, "He's a confessed Axe Murderer". Flight risk or not, he killed someone with an axe and admitted it. There's a profound disparity here with what would be considered normal or acceptable in the rest of the world.

Ye, but he killed his stepfather. He has (had) only one stepfather so is unlikely to commit the same offence while on bail.

"Axe-murderer" has a nice ring to it, but technically, this was a 'hatchet' (they call it a 'hand axe'). When I think 'Axe-murderer', I think Jack Nicholson in The Shining. Who cares if he used a staple gun or even a chainsaw? I suppose the weapon used says something about the killer if it was a repeated method. Like if a woman drowned people in her breast milk--that would be kind of memorable, and worthy of a moniker.

What a great decision. Since he is already facing the death penalty, he may as well axe as many people as he can. At only Bt 30,000 it is a bargain.

You really think a 15 year old boy is facing the death penalty?
