True 100M/200M Internet, Is It Really Worth?

Saw it post on true official website, is this really worth if I want to subscribe 100Mbps or 200Mbps package?

Anybody already have this package? Is this shared with other user or what? I am concern about actual speed that could reach, how much up and down, will it stable?

I have the docsis 14/1.4Mbps package, and internationally it not always reaches line speed,

Using a download accelerator (10 simultaneous connections downloading 1 file) it maxes out my connection, but single connections (a standard "save as" download) seldom goes above 4-5 Mbps. Even some youtube video's (those not cached on Google's Thai server) sometimes need buffering.

IMO, these very fast packages are only useful/worth it if you have to move big chunks of data between Thai based servers.

You could get a massive file from Phuket to Chiang Mai faster then over a local 100 Mbps LAN (if using the right equipment)!

I just got the 50/5 package a few days ago after being on 3BB Premier 5/1 for many years. So far it has been very stable and speed is overall great. I have tried several speed tests and they give me anything from 2 - 30 mbps internationally, depending on location. It's hard to say which one is really correct due to caching etc. But the overall performance is great compared to my previous package with 3BB. Same price as well.

Youtube loads instantly and Netflix works great. On Torrents I sometimes get up to 4 Mbps download speed, which means I get a movie downloaded within 5-10 minutes. Can't complain. To Singapore I get on average 15/4 Mbps, which is great since I have my server there.

Since I only had it for a few days, it's too early to say if its stable enough for my needs, but so far so good. If I were you I would get the 50/5 package since I don't think there is a big difference in international access on the 100/200 packages. You could always upgrade later if you want, but you can't downgrade (thats what True told me anyway).

100-200 MBps? Surely they are joking. That is about 1k - 2k mbps. Gigabit LAN is BIT, not Byte.

I do not believe it. I do not believe 100 - 200 mbps either. I have the fastest cable internet in the US and it is 30 mbps or about 4 MBps down and about 1 MBps up, and that's FAST!!!

Yes, it's gigabit connection

I will show you guys what is ultra high speed

Wicked...

That's faster then what you can pump through gigabit ethernet!

Different technology then giga ethernet.

No way you pump 900+ mbps through gigabit ethernet, cat 6 cable and gigabit switch over any distance...

Just wondering how your router/modem is connected to your PC...

Can'y make much of the screenshot

that's easy... I think he is not using his PC but rather runs windows on a server at OVH datacenter near Lyon and accesses it through some kind of remote desktop like for example VNC.

Called dedicated server, they have even 10 Gbps connection. ...

That is not a home network. I've seen those speeds at a Google data center. Big fiber optic. Hundreds of servers for a single use, almost like bit torrent. We set that up in the Netherlands for VISA and Mastercard.

Still if you go onto the internet, the first common server will throttle you down. Even backbone servers will. Those speeds can only be maintained on a LAN, and then with special equipment far beyond what we can do.

In real life experience for home or business use, streaming live video or even YouTube etc., 4Mbs down and 1 MBps up is way fast. Much less will do.

Other people will do more than steaming, bittorrent may request that high speed.

Hi Monty can you post a speedtest link from Bangkok server?

2345291292.png

Above within Thailand.

Below to the US, from a speedtest on which the ISP cannot cheat with caching:

Speed Test #103374790 by dslreports.com

Run: 2012-12-01 21:57:26 EST

Download: 1970 (Kbps)

Upload: 375 (Kbps)

In kilobytes per second: 240.5 down 45.8 up

Tested by server: 54 java

User: 2 @ dslreports.com

As you can see, close to full line speed withing Thailand, and barely 2 Mbps to the US!

Now, using a download accelerator using 8 or simultanious connections, speed suddenly shoots up to line speed as well, so basically true is limiting speed per connnection!

The 100-200 mbps speed is only the "local link" between you and True ISP.

Most Servers and routers around the globe have limitted bandwidth. So what you actually get as a single user with that connection is maybe 1-10mbps on average.

for browsing the internet and normal things, this super "100mbps" internet is not different than the 10mbps connection. since most servers dont have such a dedicated uplink speed at all times.

So, basically you will be using no more than 1-10% of the bandwidth most of the time. to really use that whole bandwidth, you will need thousands of simultaneous connections, and download very large files,

so that the TCP congestion control will let the speed of the transfer grow.

There are many factors to consider, these raw numbers does not show you all the picture, it's mostly a marketing strategy.

The other important factors to consider is the Ping, Latency and maximum number of connections.

For example, on all ADSL speeds from true, you will get the same ping to a USA server using the 200mbps and 10mbps, which is around 300-350ms.

What about your hardware?, can your router give you 10,000+ active connections? does your router have enough CPU power to route 100mbps? most wireless routes cant route over 20mbps.

you will need a 4000 Baht wireless router to be able to have some good speeds over 50mbps on the Wan router port.

I've seen the coaxial modem/routers from true for those highspeed, the wireless part of it is so crap, very poor hardware.

You will have to purchase and high-end 5000 baht Wireless router and use the True Coaxial model as a Bridge only, no routing.

See http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/ for router benchmarks.

the only possible reasons of even considering this 100mbps is that you have around 50+ active users, a big cafe/restaurant with free internet,

or an apartment that shares the internet to all rooms, super heavy torrenting 24/7.

I have 10mbps and internationally it's usually 2-4mbps Maximum. Trueadsl cheats on the speedtest.net tests. no matter which country you choose the test, it will give 30ms. ping,

which is impossible to that pind to the US.

I believe that the speedtest servers IP whitelisted in a very high priority queue in the True QOS routers, because they all give very high speed, no matter which server you test.

and about Torrents, if you are getting 800-1200 KB/s (8mbps) torrents download it is because TRUE have torrent cache servers,

so that popular torrents will be very fast to download and avoid international traffic, (Save bandwidth)

you can prove by looking at the Peer IP, you will notice that 1 or 2 peers are uploading to you at 500K/s, and the IP belongs to true network.

They have been doing this for at least 5 years that I know of.

This is very good indeed, but dont be fooled to believe it's because you have a great international link. it's because they are smart to use bittorrent caching servers.

so, in short, the 100mbps is not worth it unless you have a real use of it, and as True says on their contract policy: "Service is not garatied" but you are gantied to pay the bill.

Not entirely true (pun intended :) ).

I can download from international servers definitely not cached in Thailand, with multiple connections, at line speed (14mbps in my case).

Personally I am not willing to pay high prices for faster speeds.

I can pull 6 GB per hour through my 699/month line.

Good enough for me, that's 4 full HD blue rays per day...

As the above poster says, having lots of people on your connection would warrant those expensive packages....
