PATTAYA:--Friday Night saw the grand opening of the Pattaya International Fireworks Festival 2012 which saw thousands converge on Pattaya Beach to enjoy the first of two nights of non-stop firework displays from international teams of pyrotechnic professionals.

Khun Itipon, the Mayor of Pattaya opened the event earlier in the night at the Bali Hai Port, at the south-end of Pattaya Beach where many of the side-events during the two days will be taking place.

This year’s event is on a much smaller scale than previous years with only four teams from Singapore, United States, China and Canada taking part. On Friday night the highlight was an amazing display called “Brighten Your Life”.

Stalls selling food and gift items stretch along Pattaya Beach and on Saturday Night well known Thai Superstars and Bands will be in attendance with the event culminating in a concert at 10pm from the “Tatoo Colour” band popular at the moment with Thais, especially those in their teens.

I took the family down and we watched all 4 fireworks shows and none of them were even close to as spectacular as the shows from last year.

It was nice to have all of beach road closed to traffic since the vendors took over the sidewalks at least there was a safe place to walk down the street.

We all had a good time and were pleased that traffic and crowds were not nearly as bad as we had expected. No intention to go tonight though.
