Well it happened agian in the land of smiles, no power, no phones, no banks, no currency exchange, tourist's leaving in droves and one who is going to be held accountable,,,

the amount of tourists that have left and cancelled thier trip too samui is beyond anything I have seen before.

the island has yet agian lost millions of baht at the start of high season.

when will the fools that make thease decisions learn? when things need to be done on the island, then for crying out loud please do it before or after high season!!!

they did this last year with installing pipe work , and made a hell of a mess in HIGH SEASON, I'm happy that things are being done after so long, they a far overdue, but timeing is somthing that needs to be concidered,

note, I suspect the cable work was pushed ahead by politistions so they can do what the thai and all politisions do best???

whistling.gif Do you have any factual information on what actually happened?

There are a lot of rumors, but from what I've seen so far a dearth of actual facts.

many people have been offering their opinions but very few of them seem to know the actual cause of the power outages.

But not knowing the facts (and I don't know the facts either) hasn't stopped a lot of people writing indignant letters blaming .... anyone.... without knowing the facts of the matter,

Until the facts are made clear it just isn't possible to tell who or what is responsible.

Ultimately the PM. She has to take responsibility, or she cannot call herself a leader. Certainly the governor of surat province should be immediately removed from his job. Immediately. He showed tremendous incompetence. The central govt. should have gotten the military involved after 24 hours. Once they realized the 12 year old boys running the power authority had no means of making the repair, they should have treated this like the national crisis this was, and done anything possible to get it fixed within hours, not days. Just one more black eye on the face of thailand. Just one more piece of evidence that regardless of the face they like to put on it, thailand is deeply mired within the 3rd world, and the infrastructure here is not what they want us to believe. Coming just before the peak season, the timing was poor.

You can point the finger at who ever you please but at the end of the day it doesn't change anything. Things like this happen from time to time, whilst it's highly annoying and very inconvenient, you're not going to get anywhere by ranting and raving about who we should be blaming. Accidents happen. Whether it was high season or not, it still might have happened.

One theory:- Submarine cables if not buried in the seabed can get snagged by trawl nets

Or an anchor dragged across them. w00t.gif

well it was bletherlent and all...and I thought it was the perfect time to engage in the two great passions in life: deep sea diving and screwing around with electric cables.

OP: a main underground power cable short circuited, it was not due to preplanned cable work going wrong. Any delays in the repair work should be under the responsibility of the relevant manager. More than likely ham strung by lack of timely investment in the infrastructure, spare parts supply chain/tools etc e.g. a quote from the Nation "Officials were waiting for hydraulic pliers to be delivered from Nakhon Si Thammarat"

In August 2009, 55 million peolpe on the east coast of the US were without power for 2 days. 11 deaths were attributed to the blackout. What caused it? Over demand on the power grid. It was a very hot day and at around 1030 am one power station shutdown due to overload. That switched the power demand to another causing a snowball effect and by 4pm 256 power stations were off line. That incident seems to make the problem on Samui look rather small. There will be a lot of finger pointing especially since TIT and there is an up coming election, but sometimes SHIT JUST HAPPENS!
