Police to get new armoured personnel carriers for use in South

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Cabinet yesterday approved Bt66 million from the central budget to buy 33 armoured personnel carriers for police to use in the southern border provinces.

Government spokesman Tossaporn Serirak said Tuesday that police had requested 210 vehicles costing Bt420 million.

The 33 new units will replace 27 that are over eight years old and another six that were badly damaged during security operations in the southernmost provinces.

The vehicles each weigh over a tonne and come with a diesel engine, double cab and fourwheel drive.

The Budget Bureau has told the National Police to use its annual budget to procure the other 177 vehicles.

Police said armoured personnel carriers help reduce casualties and boost the morale of security officials working in the restive South.
