Looking to do this trip in late January.

Anyone with any hints, tips, roads to avoid, places of interest on the way etc etc.

NB I will have my wife and 22 month old daughter with.

I've done this trip a few times, but to Kalasin not Maha Sarakham. Generally, I take 2 days, stopping in Phitsanaluk. The trip across the mountains from Khon Kean to Phitsanaluk has some of the most beautifal scenery you will find in Thailand. Well worth taking your time and enjoying the views.
