Meteor Shower - Dec 13 2012

Featured Replies

The last meteor shower of 2012 will be the Geminids, peaking late night December 13 until dawn December 14. The information that I find on the internet is that this is visible worldwide. But I'm unclear about the best viewing times.

I don't know, but suppose that the information in the EarthSky site is based in the US, so hours given probably relate to what's visible on the other side of the planet. Does anybody know when best viewing is possible here in Thailand?

Article below (in Thai) seems to suggest that this will be sizeable and viewable for some time.

On the 13th from 10.00pm to nearly morn the next day. Article gives direction to look, camera settings etc.

My Thai is not that good so if you are really interested suggest you have someone fluent Thai/English to peruse article.

Hi all meteor showers are best around local midnight when they will be seen streaking from E to W across the sky then become more head-on from the zenith as dawn approaches. Look for the Gemini twins and the meteors will streak away in all directions from there.

Perfect timing for tonight's Shan new year celebrations - don't get them confused with the fireworks smile.png

We got up last night about 2:30 AM and we saw about 2-3 meteors per minute. Going to give another watch tonight.

We were wondering what all the fireworks were all about. At 3 AM they were still going strong in two locations we could see.

Slightly west of straight up. Some were quite dim and not much arc, but a few were fairly impressive. As soon as we walked out, we were seeing them. My wife saw the first ones without her glasses so she hurried back in to get them. I used to watch meteor showers from up high in the mountains back in Idaho and it seems that they peak between 2 and 3 AM.

Find a good dark spot with no streetlights.
