Transfer applications rise in wake of targeted killings Yingluck to visit Pattani today to be briefed on situation

PATTANI: -- A large number of Buddhist teachers in the troubled deep South have applied for transfers, with their morale at its lowest point following reports that they have become a new target group in the southern insurgency, Deputy Education Minister Sermsak Pongpanich said yesterday.

Statistics show that 80 per cent of the roughly 150 teachers killed in the violence in the area over the past eight years were Buddhists, he said.

In recent weeks, four teachers have been slain while on duty, as a result of which teachers' associations protested the government's failure to provide security for education staff by closing around 300 schools in Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani. The schools reopened on Monday.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will today travel to Pattani to give moral support to teachers and be briefed and witness the situation in the region, said PM's Office permanent secretary Tongthong Jantarangsu.

She will then travel to other areas in the region, but these cannot be revealed, he said, adding that the premier wanted to listen to the proposals and demands of teachers' representatives.

Yingluck's visit takes place after the most recent attack on teachers, in which two were killed in Pattani's Nong Chik district while having lunch in their school on Tuesday by insurgents dressed in camouflage gear.

Although armed with assault rifles, the insurgents were allowed to enter the school as the teachers mistook them for soldiers. Both teachers were shot from behind after failing to understand the insurgents' order to kneel down, as it was spoken in Yawi.

Federations of teachers in the South yesterday agreed at an urgently arranged meeting that they would close all 1,200 schools in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat today and tomorrow, as they were unsure about their security following the violence of the past weeks.

Sanguan Intarak, president of the teachers' federation in Narathiwat and adviser to the federations in the three southernmost provinces, said the closures would allow security officials to check and review security measures and safety systems in order to better protect schools and staff.

He said the decision should not be interpreted as an attempt by teachers to hold students hostage in exchange for their protection.

Buddhist teachers in three districts of Narathiwat yesterday refused to work following reports that insurgents are now targeting them.

A source said four Buddhist teachers at four schools in Chanae, Rangae and Joh I Rong districts had reported instead to the central authority in the province.

Meanwhile, Prasit Meksuwan, president of the Civil Society Council of Southernmost Thailand, called for the immediate removal of Buddhist teachers from risky to safer areas and for security personnel to be with education staff throughout the school day and, if possible, around the clock.

He said their immediate removal was required in light of the brutal killing of a school director and a teacher, both Buddhists, in Pattani.

Prasit said the deaths of four teachers in 20 days was unacceptable, and represented the profession's worst loss in the deep South in eight years.

"The tragedy occurred |even though it was promised |that security would be stepped up and education personnel would |be under the closer watch of the security authorities," he added.

Meanwhile, a man was arrested in Narathiwat's Rangae district yesterday for his alleged involvement in Tuesday's fatal attack on a teashop.

The suspect, Zavavi Puteh, 20, was detained during two separate early-morning raids in Tambon Bangorsato.

There are several outstanding arrest warrants for his arrest, including one for the theft of an ice-cream pickup in October.

The pickup is alleged to have been converted into a bomb-making vehicle.

The raids were conducted following the attack on a teashop in Rangae, the death toll from which on Tuesday had risen to six after Zitirohhima Sama, 70, succumbed to gunshot wounds in hospital. An 11-month-old girl was also among those killed.

The early-morning attack took place at the crowded teashop when men armed with assault rifles parked their vehicle and started firing at customers.

Under threat

22,900 school administrators and teachers based in the region and violence-prone areas of Songkhla and Satun in 2011.

1,303 schools in South run by the Office of Basic Education Commission in 2011.

158 people in the education field have been killed since violence broke out in January

2004 -124 were teachers and 34 school personnel.

6,100+ teachers have applied to be moved away from the South since 2002, but applications of only 1,800 teachers have been approved.

Thaksin started a lot of troubles by dividing some provinces in the south in green, yellow and red zones. Innocent teachers are paying for his mistakes

How should clone "Supergirl" solve this problem, she doesn't even know how to spell diplomacy..--wai2.gif

Quickest way out is to drive a mini bus-tour bus and flee the scene---but serious action has to be taken asap, put some burberry shops down there and some people may see whats going on?.....it is out of sight out of mind and also too big a headache for Yingluck to tackle, and near too late, it's war down there really but corruption is more impotant--big money---(BKK thinking)

coffee1.gifcrazy.gif WHO can <deleted> Blame Them...Why wound anyone of sound mind and body want to work in an area that is totally out of control...

Unless of course they HAVE a SCREW LOOSE in their HEAD.coffee1.gifcrazy.gif

Arsonists are setting schools on fire since 1992. Sonthi the couptaker love to point fingers to Thaksin tough he was responsible for the massacre of youths in a mosque and he was responsible for the completely incompetent measures taken in the South by the army.

The army was too busy protecting ancient bodies, they are so damned incompetent that they never ever even by accident arrest a bombmaker or other terrorist murderer. When weapons are stolen from military bases the responsible people just have a day off and boys from the North or North East get killed. There is just one conclusion possible; the generals are stakeholders in the violence most probably because they are a huge beneficiary of money, most of it can be spend secretly and it is not on the hunt for terrorists or material given the airplanes that fall out of the sky like raindrops, most probably the money is used for a new Benz for the ladies of the generals for buying influence in courts and for resorts and houses.

Let Prayuth take the stance and grill him over his idiot bombscanners which he still considers "suitable" let he answer the question why he is unable to catch any murderer. At the very least they could ask support from countries like Israel who know how to deal with scum.

These terrorist bastards or as Mr Chalerm prefers, insurgents are winning hands down due to the cowardice of the Government and military to take apprpriate action to curb this violence. Miss Photo Shop PM's visit is a total waste of time and money as she is inept and clueless as to the actions needed. We are living in a country where you can be shot, beheaded and blown up for trying to teach children not to be as dumb or reticent as their parents.

My family are from the south and many are in the teaching proffesion and we have lost two already in this violence that this purile Government does it's upmost best to ignore.

It is also interesting to note that according to that clown Chalerm terrorism is not an issue in this country however, the PM's itinery is withheld on security grounds. Clowns in a circus.

Closing the schools for 2 days to check and review security measures. Goodness me, how much checking and reviewing needs to happen?

Heres a thought. How about all of the teachers stop indefinitely. Surely that would grab the Governments attention. Yes, an inconvenience to the children, and yes, that would be as an initial win for the murdering cowards.

But, unless the government is forced to do something then the status quo will remain.

Perhaps it's time to let the separatists know that, besides being hunted down, there are other repercussions for their attacks on schools and educators. if the repercussions are publicized, the blame for them can be placed squarely on those making these attacks.

But what repercussions are suitable? I suggest that if ant Thai government school is attacked, then the closest madrasa is closed and the pupils transferred to the government school. Teachers suitably qualified could also be absorbed, but the government curriculum would be followed.

Queueing up for the shooting gallery, and all they do is apply for a transfer?!?!? Who can blame the killers when their targets behave with such passive stupidity?

Yeah right, who can blame the killers! (<deleted>!). The teachers obviously deserve it for being there. Every day someone amazes me on TV. You already win todays prize and its only 1125am but i am sooooo certain nobody is going to outdo you.

I did not say the teachers obviously deserve anything. You said that!

There is more than one side to this. The ones who are caught in the middle and insist on staying instead of relocating are playing the odds. I think that is stupid; stupid because they go to school every day knowing they are a target, and yet they continue to do so whilst making no overtures to remedy the situation or to protect themselves against eventual elimination. I guess that is why you are here and not down there, am I correct? It would be interesting to hear the opinion of a teacher who lives down there and get their reaction to my view, instead of someone who does not live down there and embraces childish sarcasm in the comfort of their home.

Close the schools and let them homeschool or learn a trade. I really don't think the results could be much worse. As for the teachers there, I hope they'll get out with their lives and live to teach another day in another place.

A number of off-topic posts and replies have been deleted.

The teachers are targets because they are government employees. Many of these teachers are assigned to work in the south by the government, they do not teach there by choice. A former co-worker's wife worked in the south for quite a few years before she was permitted to transfer.

There are two solutions to this. Neither will be done. Perhaps they are "pie in the sky" ideas.

1. Adopt a complete footing of war against these terrorists. Shoot on sight policy along with complete border protection and massive intelligence/inflitration/education program. And be prepared to stay like that for as many years as it takes.

2. Sell the restive southern provinces back to Malaya. They belonged to them over 100 years ago anyway. Use the money to relocate all Buddists Thais who wish to move away and adopt point 1 if the Muslim terrorists want to take it any further beyond the new border.

As I have posted before don't be surprised if there's a terrorist attack in Phuket or similiar tourist area in the next 5 years. Scaring away tourist money is one of the best forms of terrorism leverage.

Yes.

It would be interesting.

Thing is, are there any farang teachers down there ?

Or, are there any Thai teachers that read Thai visa ?

I would love to hear first hand !
