Nearly 47 per cent worried about crime

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A recent poll on crime and police work found that 46.97 of Thais were worried about crimes, a police said yesterday.

Pol Col Prapon Sahaphatthana, head of the research project, said the Royal Thai Police and the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) conducted the survey. A total of 12,870 people, including community-policing volunteers in the jurisdiction of 99 precincts, took part. The poll said 65.41 per cent of people had confidence in the police.

The fear of crime was also ranked in terms of areas: the largest number of people scared of crime were in Provincial Police Region 8, the Southern Border Provinces Police Operation Centre and the Provincial Police Region 5 at 54.32 per cent, 52.36 per cent and 51.55 per cent respectively, while people in the Provincial Police Region 3 had the least number of those worried about crime at 32.27 per cent.

Regarding the people's confidence in police, the Provincial Police Region 3 gained the most confidence at 82.63 per cent, followed by the Provincial Police Region 7 at 75.01 per cent while the Provincial Police Region 8 had the least at 55.82 per cent.

In Thai speak this probably means that the other 53 per cent are committing crimes, and that in some regions over 80 per cent know if they do commit a crime they can pay off the police and not be chargedwai2.gif

Wow. What rubbish.

I have never, NEVER, talked to a Thai who had any confidence in the police.

Only 47%coffee1.gif

not that these surveys are the least bit reliable but that seems like an awful low percentage ... at least in terms of where I come from where if you aren't worried about crime then you likely will become a victim. Grant it that crime is lower in major cities here compared to those in the US, I would still think the number is low but then again not sure what other results they would get given it appears they were being asked by police to basically rate the police.

The politicians and police are the most criminal people in Thailand, so is it any wonder that the poor and defenseless are the ones living in fear??

As mentioned above, I'm not sure which set of figures troubled me the most.

But after a bit of thought it would have to be the percentage of Thai's that have confidence in police.

But maybe that figure came in form of a response from government house ??

Well it only goes to show that Liars Figure, and Figures Lie...coffee1.gif

There is not a scrap of confidence in the police, help from them usually meens paying a donation for it. They are a franchise, sort of private business seperate from the government. In my experience few Thais go to the police for help, they hate them, but would never speak about it, most would fear death if they openly spoke bad about them.

Apart from roadside checks and school trafic duties, little positive comes out of the their departments. Personal gain is their main function, bribes paid etc.

There are so many social events for them to attend especially local/rural to grease the palm or lubricate the gullet.

I have many friends in the force, and a minority mean well but are controlled by the heads in each section. I have a feeling deap inside of me that the figures given COULD have been tampered with.

Oh I forgot to mention, the TAT Tourism Authority of Thailand is also the most criminal one, murdering (Indirectly) several lives of innocent touristsbah.gifbah.gifbah.gif

And fearful they should be. When a police officer can be dragged to his death in a hit and run in central Bangkok, and the driver found to be DUI and drugs. The driver's staff then bribes a staff and a senior police to "coverup" and take the fall. No indictments, no warrants, no official charges. This story was in all the world news for 10 days and then it just died. It seems that the Thai newspapers have colluded with the hit and run driver to "coverup" and squash the matter, while they publish petty criminal arrests and violations. No Mr. Bigs are ever handcuffed and perp walked. It's preposterous. Total breakdown of law and order, prosecutorial, and a judicial system.

The biggest criminals are the police, let's see.

How many senior ex police officers do we know who are considered to be on a nodding acquaintance with the truth?

Here's a couple of names to start the ball roiling. Thaksin and Chalerm , as I said, two names to start the ball rolling.

...'Royal Thai Police and the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) conducted the survey.'

Unquestionably, the results would be _very_ different if the survey was conducted by a fully independet organization (if there is such a thing in Thailand)

and the Royal Thai Police were not involved in it's implementation!

The poll said 65.41 per cent of people had confidence in the police.

You bet ya. Confidence if a crime is commited the right amount of Baht will set the captive free.

Do you trust me?

Great thread! Also my favorite view.

... said the Royal Thai Police and the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) conducted the survey. A total of 12,870 people, including community-policing volunteers in the jurisdiction of 99 precincts, took part ...

1. The police (with NIDA) conducted the pool.

2. Those polled included policing volunteers.

Would it be a given that there would be strong bias towards the police?

Can this poll have any credibility?

I think the story was mis-translated and the survey really said 65% of Thais live in fear of the police.
