Full Time Study Options Other Than Thai Language

I am currently on a ED visa studying Thai language.

However, I am aware that the ED visa is also available for study in other areas.

For example I know that I could have started an MBA at a Thai university.

However, I am more very interested to find out if any one has themselves, or knows of, some interesting alternative fields of study here that are acceptable for apply for the ED visa.

I know of three:

Buddism

Diver training

Muay thai

Anyone know of any other cool options (and even better) can you also provide the contact details for school or other entity that is offering the course or program.

I am on a language ED visa too.

I like the other option which is professional massage training, it can be expensive though. I found it fun too. If you're interested just search on Google and you get many schools that offer eligible courses for ED visa which takes up more than 6 months

  • Cookery (not limited to Thai)
  • Martial arts (not limited to Thai); this includes Tai Chi Quan
  • Qi Gong
  • Language (not limited to Thai)

You can learn anything at all as long as it is from an accredited place (or person) of instruction.

Don't quote me on this but if I remember a discussion that I had with someone who knows correctly, it doesn't matter how obscure it is, if upon successful completion of the course you get an international or industry standard certificate then your instructor is 'accredited'. For example, if you're learning to make Kris daggers from the old bloke down south who was on TV presenting one to His Majesty, you're not likely to get any kind of paper qualification judging by the looks of his workshop (dirt with a corrugated iron roof, piles of scrapped vehicle suspension and a furnace), but on the other hand if it can be confirmed that you are being taught to make Kris daggers by him then no immigration official is going to gainsay it because the old man is one of the few people left in Thailand who know how to make Kris daggers, if not the only one, and since the king accepted a dagger from him as a gift it has got to be an industry standard.

I suppose it comes down to whether you are actually looking to expand your knowledge or just wanting to extend your visa. I mean not sure how wide the acceptance of a PHD in Driver Training issued from Thailand. Suspect laughter and ridicule could await you.

You can expand your knowledge and extend your Thai visa at the same time - that and whether or not ridicule awaits depends on your choice of education. wink.png

Hmm the Kris dagger thing is interesting...

I love fishing, but have never learned to use a cast net. Would love to have that skill...

Wonder if I can find a registered school of traditional fishing methods....

Fisheries department? Kasetsart University (University of Agricultural Science)? The latter is supposed to be one of the better universities in Thailand, quite hard to get into and teach far more than just agriculture these days. I'd give them a try first of all.

More possibilities, I'm aware there are foreign students studying:

- Both bachelor and masters degrees in music at Payap Uni., in Chiang Mai.

- Masters degree in Education

-Bachelor and masters in business.

And at many Thai unis it's not necessary to have a bachelor degree in either Education of Business before studying these subjects at masters level.

I have many foreign students in my masters of education and MBA classes.

One of my MBA students from Europe has established that he can continue his Ed visa to study for his DBA degree (Doctor of Business Administration).

Hmm some interesting options so far...but none that really appeal.

I would like to do something entirely left field...

Anymore suggestions would be welcome.
