Good And Cheap Hdmi Cables

Featured Replies

I read up on this a little. It seems for the average user that a "cheap" cable from Amazon for a few bucks is just as good as more expensive cables. Yet, we are in Thailand. Anybody have luck finding "Amazon equivalents", meaning cheap and effective HDMI cables in Bangkok.

I tried but failed to get a cheap HDMI cable in Thailand. In the end i got a friend in the UK to order them from Amazon, only cost 3 GBP, and post them here.

All HDMI cables are equal

Not really.

Not only are there several different versions of HDMI cable (1.0, 1.1, 1.2/2a, 1.3/3a/3b/3c, 1.4/4a/4b) but also individual brands/makes may not actually live up to the full spec they claim to have.

Also some brands will be more durable and have better quality plugs.

And above all they aren't the same price.

That said, decent cheap HDMI cables (such as those sold by Amazon in their "basic" range) can be highly satisfactory and just because you may pay 10 times as much doesnt mean you are getting 10 times the value.

Per blackpuddingB, they are not all equal but most will be adequate. The ones sold at Amorn for 199 baht work well for me on several TV sets and 3 computers.

Can you let me know where Amorn is? Thanks. Edit.... never mind. I found it. Thanks.

There is one on the fourth floor of Fortune Town Mall, down towards the hotel end.. There are others scattered around town, but that's the one I am familiar with. Plus, that is where I got my HDMI cable too. Home Pro want about 3000 bath for one. I just laughed at them.

I saw one for 1000 baht yesterday at a hifi store, and I still laughed :)

Thanks.

biggrin.png HDMI is digital. So you ether have a digital encrypted connection between two devices or you don't. You can opt for gold plated jacks to avoid corrosion. So even the cheapest lead will give you a decent picture .

Tesco brand @ 220 baht, Belkin @ 400 baht, a no-name cable @ 250 baht. All work with my computer monitors and TV, can't notice any difference other than the Belkin is a really tight fit and sometimes takes a few goes to get a TV signal. Take a walk around any IT mall and all the small shops selling accessories have HDMI cables from 200 baht.

I read a review on the cheap HDMI cables you find on eBay and the main finding was how the cheaper ones could have a few wires less so some minor things would not work with high end systems but for the average user they were fine, same applies to the no-name brands here.

Two things to consider.

1. The two boxes have to talk through the cable, and this can be a problem,

perhaps of the past

2. IME cheaper cables can fail, after all it is electronics in the plugs at both ends

See the thread here for details of the various versions of HDMI cable
