Thai citizens can travel to Vietnam for 30 days without a visa? But if they want to stay for 3 months, is it fairly straightforward to get a 3-month visa? Also, is it easy for a UK citizen to get a 3-month visa? Do they need proof of funds, etc?

To answer your question OP, very easy to obtain a 3-month Vietnam visa for a Thai citizen. Apply online via any one of the Vietnam visa agencies and get the visa stamped at Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi airports. Both single and multiple entry are available. Proof of funds? Haha..it's Vietnam, they don't care about anything as long as your visa is in order you'll get in, even if you have been living on such tourist or business visas for years.

Maybe you could try this link here.

Thanks for that. It's very helpful, except for the fact that you need to fly into an international airport to apply via this site. Do you know if a 3-month visa is available for land crossings, as we intend to travel from Laos to Vietnam by road. This website also seems to be selling visas on arrival. I'd prefer to get the visas before we leave.

You would either have to arrange via a travel agent or the embassy in Bangkok. URL for info at:

The application looks straightforward, apart from...

4. Approval from Immigration Authority or Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam.

It seems to imply that I need this before applying for a visa, but doesn't say how I get it. Any idea?

No need for any action by you, the Embassy Consular Services will take care of processing once forms etc have been provided
