Popular Post chonabot
Well people, it's New Years eve...barely. I woke up at 6am to the sound of Morlam thumping through my house and nether regions. It appears that 3 of my neighbours have started to celebrate in triplicate. Sadly, they are playing different songs, but they all have at least 3000 watt sound systems. I used to play with a band regularly back in the UK and we rarely would need so much power for our P.A system. I'm in a medium sized city in Isaan - not Ban Nork. I'm not complaining however, we've been invited to 4 or 5 parties and I intend to have a fun filled day or two - without driving. These systems are not cheap to hire and the families will spend most if not all of their money on booze and..well booze I cannot imagine the same thing being allowed in the Nanny state back home. I guess what I'm saying here is that Thailand knows how to party, and for that I salute you Thailand ! So here's an early Happy New Year to all TV'ers out there

Popular Post theblether
Ahem......do you mind We Scots take a 24 hour break after Boxing Day then we start celebrating New Year........there was a torch procession tonight in Edinburgh with 30,000 attending and 7,000 torch bearers . All within sight of Edinburgh castle, truly stunning. What will happen tomorrow night is there will be a mass descent in alcoholic delirium, partying, singing, dancing and outbreaks of violence. Fabulous. This will continue 24 hours a day until about the 6th, by which time the emergency services will beg us to stop as the hospitals and mortuaries will be overflowing. We'll stop for a few days then we'll start again to celebrate the Burns Suppers. The Scots on the thread will confirm the accuracy of my description of Hogmanay in Scotland. If Carlsberg did Hogmanay, they would just do it in Scotland, easily the best Hogmanay in the World. That being said, the Countdown Party in Chiang Mai was decent last year but it finished too early. Plenty of people, excellent atmosphere, and I do love watching the Lanterns fill the night sky. Happy New Year!!! It truly is a Wonderful Life.
chonabot
Agreed, as a fellow Scot ( South Uist ) - we do know how to throw a decent party It's been so long since I lived there that I have kind of forgotten
theblether
Agreed, as a fellow Scot ( South Uist ) - we do know how to throw a decent party It's been so long since I lived there that I have kind of forgotten I was up in the Highlands the on Boxing Day, a truly stunning place. I've never been to South Uist but I had a couple of legendary night in Stornoway a few years ago. Those guys know how to party
Rob8891
I think you're being too modest, Chonabot. Given a few minutes, and the warmth of the uisge mhath on your tongue, your partying skills would come flooding back. ... and after the mayhem of Hogmanay, the ceilidhs and the first-footing, there's always the joys of a Sair Heid party to further delay the after-effects of the alcoholic extravaganza, until the old New Year, of course! Party on, people; but like they used to say on "Hill Street Blues"...let's be careful out there. Slainte! PS... Great photos, theblether. Rob8891
When I first moved to the Highlands, it was still quite common for some of the locals to go outside on the bells and discharge shotguns into the air. After a very pleasant session, my neighbout went outside, fired off the gun and plunged us all into darkness. He had succeeded in blowing off the chimney-breast connection for the overhead electricity line into his house. Continuing by the flickering light of the sitting room fire, and with a few candles to boot, made for an even better atmosphere than hitherto. Sadly, those days are gone here, but then again, nostalgia ain't what it used to be! Best wishes for a happy and successful 2013 to one and all (sorry it's early, but there'll be nae chance of typing tomorrow night.... Popular Post theblether
That reminds me.......a lament to the people who left home and travelled to seek new lives. For the Scots it was typified by the economic drive behind the Highland Clearances, for many of the Irish it was motivated by fleeing the Potato Famine and lack of opportunity in their homeland, The Germans, Italians, and sundry other Europeans took off to pastures new in the US and Canada, and the English spread throughout many parts of the World. At one time moving across the world was a dangerous task, and driven by the human need to improve your life, here's a statue I happened across last week.... That statue is situated in a town called Golspie in the Highlands, here's the view from the statue....... As I said, at one time it was a dangerous task to move to new lands, now not so......however!!! To every Thaivisa member that has taken that step to set up a new life in a new country, you are unique. You have chosen to make a new life for yourself in a new culture. That takes a lot of bottle and for that, I salute you. Sláinte Edited December 31, 2012 by theblether

Popular Post theblether
Supergran was a superhero!!.....and every wee Scottish boy has a Supergran It's handy that you put that clip up reminding us of those that have gone before us........New Year is a time to reflect on what has gone before, as well as to anticipate what is yet to come. Many of our parents / grandparents and those that have gone before had the bottle to travel around the world to make a better life for themselves, it's fitting on this New Years Eve that we take the time to remember those who took the chance to give us a better life. To remember those that fought............. To remember those that built countries........... So that people could get on with the task of Loving............ and living life to the full....... Australia Day......2012. Let's party!!!

As true with the Scottish, the Irish are also spread to the four corners of the earth, none so unusual as this lot below That was interesting, and I liked the line " that's what happens when your on the losing side ".......... A lot of people don't know that there was a large contingent of Irish that fought against the Americans at The Alamo. I'll not start a fight with our US colleagues today except to say that the real story of The Alamo is not as righteous as some believe. There is a Mexican Pipe band still on the go just now in tribute to those that served and died for the cause......
