HM releases wishes of happiness to Thais

By Digital Media

king.jpg

BANGKOK, Jan 1 -- His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej has conveyed his New Year wishes to his people, urging all to extend compassion to each other, which he said was the way to happiness, in his royal New Year's greeting card released by the Royal Household Bureau on Monday.

The card depicts His Majesty the King in a striped light blue shirt and black trousers, sitting in a chair with floral arrangements in the background.

By His Majesty's side sits his favourite royal pet dogs Khun Thong Daeng on his right and Khun Mali, another canine companion, on his left.

The card is a royal tradition which the King has extended to the Thai public for the past several years.

The card bears a poem, a royal message which is a royal blessing to the King's subjects.

In his poem, His Majesty the King said compassion is a virtue which can bring happiness to all. The grateful responses to those who extend their compassion will add the value of care and friendship between people.

In the top right-hand corner is a small image of the royal crown and in the lower portion is the poem.

On the left hand side appears the words Sor Kor Sor 2556, the Thai Buddhist calendar equivalent of Happy New Year 2013.

Along the bottom of the card, a New Year's message written in Thai wishes everyone a happy and prosperous year and the English words, Happy New Year 2013.

The card, which was released about 7.45pm on New Year's Eve, is framed with rows of smiling faces.

His Majesty the King also looks cheerful, with a light smile on his face. (MCOT online news)

Crowds pack countdown celebrations

The Nation

30197071-01_big.jpg

New Year's Eve was cheered in last night by throngs of revellers who gathered at Countdown 2013 parties nationwide, while tourist sites such as mountaintops and beaches were crowded with holidaymakers.

In Bangkok, hundreds of thousands attended Countdown events at CentralWorld, Crystal Park, Asiatique and Sanam Luang - the last for New Year prayers. At CentralWorld alone, at least 200,000 were expected. City police prepared 5,000 officers and volunteers to provide security at these sites.

In Chiang Mai city, more than 10,000 revellers were expected to turn up at Tha Phae Gate plaza's "Chiang Mai Countdown Festival 2013". Some 2,000 police were set to maintain order, while floating lanterns saw a 10-per-cent increase in sales as people bought yi peng lanterns to release for good luck.

In Khon Kaen's Muang district, where the countdown theme was "Nakhon Khon Kaen: Dance City", 500 police were on guard.

In the southern city of Hat Yai, locals and tourists from Malaysia and Singapore attended the "Night Paradise Hat Yai Countdown 2013", despite rainfall that was expected to dampen the festive mood until tomorrow. Officials beefed up security and kept watch for any violence from the restive far South.

Many people enjoyed a break camping in cool or cold weather on mountaintops. Phitsanulok's Phu Hin Rong Kla Park saw 7,000 campers setting up tents to observe the first daylight of 2013.

Nakhon Ratchasima's Wang Nam Kheow and Pak Chong districts, plus Khao Yai National Park, saw more than 60,000 tourists. They helped generate an estimated Bt400 million in revenue at the park over the long holiday.

About 10,000 devout Buddhists went to worship before the world's largest statue of the late respected monk Venerable Somdet Putthachan (To Phromrangsi) in Sikhiu district, before attending the cross-year prayers in the evening.

Warehouses lost in Bt80m blaze

The Nation

Two chemical-substance and fertiliser warehouses were burned down in Chachoengsao's Bang Nam Prieo district yesterday, causing Bt80 million in losses. Fifteen fire trucks went to the warehouses to fight the blaze.

Prissana Kengkanphanich, 41, a relative of the warehouses' owner, said the buildings housed hundreds of tonnes of chemical substances and fertilisers for agricultural use. As all the workers had taken leave to celebrate the New Year festival, no one was on duty there.

She said villagers saw smoke at 10am but they did not think the fire had broken out at the warehouse until they saw the flames at noon. She estimated that the damaged chemicals, fertilisers and buildings were worth at least Bt80 million.

Police said a short circuit could have caused the fire.

3 Thai men sexually assaulted Russian pair

The Nation

CHON BURI: -- A knife used by three Thai men who raped and robbed two Russian women in Bang Lamung, Chon Buri, on December 26 was found 50 metres from the crime scene, police said yesterday.

Police said they asked convenience stores and petrol stations to give them footage from closed-circuit cameras to try to identity the pickup used by the attackers as they drove around Pattaya before going out of the city and raping the victims at a reservoir.

Police expect results of tests on the victims to find DNA of the three attackers will be concluded this week.

A source said police had interrogated a garage owner after a person called him and proposed to sell a pickup, as its appearance was similar to one used by the attackers. The source said the person wanted to cut the car apart before selling it to him, but the owner insisted he wanted to buy the vehicle intact, not in parts.

Fishing boats take shelter in South

The Nation

PATTANI: -- More than 2,000 trawlers and other fishing boats have been anchored in the Pattani River in Panare district to avoid strong winds and waves after two fishing vessels capsized about a kilometre off the coast yesterday because of strong winds and waves.

Police said four fishermen including an 11-year-old boy stayed afloat in the sea for five hours before other fishermen rescued them and got them to a nearby hospital. Small fishing boats were reported to have taken a week's break.

The weather bureau warned small fishing boats to return as waves of 2-4 metres were expected until Thursday.

It also warned residents in disaster-prone areas in seven provinces - Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat - to beware of harm caused by heavy rain until tomorrow.

Corrections chief wants royal rites for warder slain by inmates

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Corrections Department chief Suchart Wong-anantachai said yesterday he had applied for royal bathing rites for Suthep Joisriket, a warder slain in Sunday's hostage drama at Ratchaburi's top-security Khao Bin Prison. Suchart will attend Suthep's funeral at Nong Nang Praew Temple.

Besides hosting the funeral, Suchart said the department would help his family and fund his 10-year-old son's education up to at least a bachelor's degree and find his widow a job at the department.

Suthep's widow Kesorn, 46, a homemaker, said she was grief-stricken by what happened and the loss of the family's breadwinner, while their son had lost his father at such young age.

"We had just talked about celebrating the New Year together but everything collapsed in the blink of an eye," she said.

Suthep was a kind guard who had worked at the prison for a decade after transferring from Nonthaburi, she said. He was a family man, she said.

Suchart said the incident may affect morale among prison officials but he believed they knew the risks of the job. He affirmed that the department gave importance to guards' security but would not negotiate with inmates beyond the point of keeping hostages safe.

Acknowledging that guards had been taken hostage several times before, he said it was partly because of manpower limits, as some 10,000 wardens have to cope with 240,000 inmates nationwide.

The current ratio of 10 warders per prison invites inmates to see opportunity in fighting their way out of prison, he said. Other countries have up to 700 guards to handle 1,000 inmates.

On Sunday afternoon, Suthep was held hostage by three life-term inmates after he caught them trying to steal a backhoe to escape. After a stand-off lasting about three hours, inmate Sutthirat Saeng-arthit, a former police officer, surrendered to officials but the other two, Ronnachai Sripankaew and Prasit Saensabai, fatally attacked Suthep, leading to officials' killing the pair.
