Obviously here in Australia its a bit hard for watery reasons, although wheres theres a will theres a way, but for those of you that originate from most of Europe, UK (tunnel crossing into France), and many other adjoining countries. Have you ever driven into Thailand before, and how was the road trip? Where did you start from and what route did you take? Any problems crossing borders? What did you do the drive in or on? Was it you couldnt be stuffed booking a plane ticket, or just hate flying?... Lifes an adeventure, and Id like to hear about your journey....wai.gif

I made plans to drive from Mumbai to KL with some like minded people but after checking all the red tape involved in moving a vehicle over political borders I gave up. I found it could be done but better on motor bike and even then, border control can make kiss your bike good bye and walk across. A nice dream and a dream it stayed.

That's been a daydream of mine to drive to Thailand, from Canada...

I think the biggest obstacle is China, as I believe you can't drive through China without a local guide for the whole ride. From Canada there's also Siberia to go through... And as has been stated, lot's of potential headaches crossing each borders. Would be great if international border regulations were more workable.

I did the overland route by surface transport in 1975. The literal end of the road was the Burmese border with the NE India states. but even then you needed special permits just to be in that part India. Still do, I've been told by NGO workers, and even more difficult to obtain. There are a few backpacker stories about having actually crossed that frontier.

The alternative route would be through China and the Borat-land. Seems to be quite a few that have journeyed this route, the travel/adventure cable TV stations have lots of documentaries of such. But my favorite was the Aussie who trekked from China to Hungary through the back country with just horses and a dog. Took him a few years. This is the sort of thing I would have considered when I was younger and crazier.

There was a story a few years ago of a guy who was going to drive from Thailand to UK in a tuk-tuk, don't know much more about it.

A few years ago a English mum and dad drove from the UK to Thailand to see there son who was working here the story was in the Phuket Gazette i recall they had great adventure.

The last part of the story was they wanted to donate the car to a Thai charity or something but the thai customs told them that unless they paid import duty on the car and then give it away for free they could not donate the the car so the car was put into a crusher
