Snowmobile accident kills six in Italian Alps

Milan, Jan 5 (AFP) A snowmobile accident in the Italian Alps has left six tourists dead and two others seriously injured, the ANSA news agency reported.

The eight - all from eastern Europe, or Russia - were riding on the vehicle across an unlit slope on Mount Cermis in the Trento region, rescuers said.

The snowmobile veered off the piste at an altitude of about 2,000 metres (6,550 feet) and overturned, ejecting its passengers, with some of them hitting rocks. The cause of the accident yesterday was not immediately known.

The dead were identified as four men and two women. The two injured were evacuated by helicopter.

Mount Cermis was the scene of two deadly cable car accidents in 1976 and 1998. In the latter a US military plane cut a cable supporting a gondola of an aerial tramway.
