A Police Colonel

Just out of interest...

How high up is a Police Colonel in the scheme of things?

Not being totally "au fait" with the Thai police ranking system..what exactly would he do?

Would he be in charge of a police station? A sub-division? An area?

How useful a "connection" would he be? whistling.gif

Absolutely no idea on any of this so thanks for the replies.

RAZZ

EDIT - already seen this on Wiki. But what does it mean in "the real world".

That means, he's already in the middle of the 'promotion' system:

He paid a lot of money, to get there, and he's already be able, to charge people, who wanna get there, in a decade or so.

What means (coming to your point), it can be 'useful' for you, cause the BIB's on the road, if knowing the connection, would grant you kind of VIP service.

But it is a sharp sword, for a 'not really a VIP-foreigner', trust me.

In special, if he would have to use the connections 'up the hill', for you!

Seen someone with really a lot of money, really good connections, but walked over the plank, too!

Yes is really is more about what his post is, not so much rank. If a local, good to know, but he will not side with you if you have problems with other locals of status.

As said he could be in-charge of school crossings.

Thailand is a strange place when it comes to who are police, many jobs here are done by Royal Thai police that would not be done in the west by police. We had a bunch up here not long age. some form of agriculture police, police cars, guns and uniforms. Set up road blocks, some bird flu scare.

Other Times we get a visit from some of the boys from BKK, local cops are petrified of them, no matter what their rank.

Nice to keep the guy on side, but don't expect any favours. Jim

OMG! 17 ranks! No wonder I can't keep the titles of some of my adult-education students (some of whom are police) straight!

Is this similar to police ranking in a typical western country. How does it compare?

Can't say for many western countries, but the ones I do know, a lot fewer rants. Read somewhere that Thailand has more army Generals than the USA.

FIL is the equivalent of a county coroner [ not medical examiner ] if you saw him in the west in uniform you would think he was an admiral in the navy. Look at most cops and they have wings on the tunic, a sign in some countries of a paratrooper, Doubt many have ever seen a plane.

It's a country that just likes ranks and uniforms. Jim

Police ranks exactly mirror army ranks and those of the other armed services.

For commissioned officers, there are three levels of captain followed by three levels of colonel and three of general.

There are three levels of, in ascending order, Nai-Roi (Master of Hundreds), followed by three levels of Nai-Phan (Master of Thousands) and three levels of Nai-Phon (Master of Men-at-arms) which correspond to the 9* western commissioned ranks. These are a direct carry-over from the pre-modern Thai army.

The lowest ranking commissioned officer is a Roi-Tri (Master of Hundreds, 3rd class) / Second Lieutenant and the highest being a Phon-Ek (Master of Men-at-arms, 1st class) / General.

Periodically you get someone who deserves or thinks he deserves to be a Jom-Phon (Arbiter of Men-at-arms) / Field Marshall who is basically in command of several armies and therefore several Phon-Ek / Generals.

*The awkward bastard child rank of Brigadier General which pushes the true number up to 10 used to be Nai-Phon-Jatawa (jatawa = rising) but has recently been changed to Phan-Ek-Phiset (Special Colonel).

Be careful. They may not be all that high up mate,

"Few people on the street would suspect that anyone walking around decked out like this was an imposter. For a bit more money to buy the appropriate cap, our graphics designer could become a police colonel (cap with one row of silver flowers) or higher ranking officer (cap with two rows of silver flowers).

Thais generally respect and even admire anyone in uniform and this may explain their popularity. And this doesn’t stop at the police and military; many other professions wear uniforms with lots of flashy of badges and decorations that can all be bought by anyone to impersonate private security guards, teachers, toll collectors on the expressways, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) officers and many more."

I like the parking attendants, with the uniform and the whistle as weapon.

They think, they are policeman. Almost every time, they try to rule the moving traffic, instead of stopping the people , from leaving private ground, as long there is traffic moving! But most often, the one or the other honk is clearing that quickly! Looks like, my car is big enough.thumbsup.gif

Police Colonel should have a very considerable net worth. From memory, the head of a police station is lower than a colonel.

if i remember it correctly ,a significant station has a ridiculous number of major generals (at least 5) all in charge of various differnnt departments

i remember reading it when there was a scandal about the police operating

a major casino in ratchada (bkk )

a few of themajors-gens had to be transferred when someone reported they were making millions every month from illegal gambling

no wonder every thai you will ever meet thinks they know someone who is "big" in the police with so many promotions and departments

In my experience the people who think they know anyone big in the police and keep going on about it tend to be farangs.

Being born and bred in this country, as most Thais are, usually gives you a pretty good idea about what's what and who's who.
