I second that if it's the one I think you mean. Called Best Camera and has very good prices, think I referred to it 'English style' as on the 2nd floor in another thread, but yes, up 2 flights of escalators turn right and about the first shop you come across.

Need to spend between 15-30k or so.

If you "need" to spend that money, you can find quality brand cams in most shops on third floor of Central Festival

Sent from my HTC One XL 4G using Thaivisa Connect App

And on that floor in Central he will certainly spend it, and probably a lot more, and get a lot less camera for his money.

And in tuk he might not be able to spend 30k for a cam... but he "needs" to spend it ;)

Most of the big brands fix their prices. There is wider selection of cameras at Big Camera in Central than you may find in other outlets.

Wherever you go, you are not going to get impartial or particularly informed advice. For your budget, some research might be in order rather than just walking into a camera shop with 30k and asking what they've got; the choices will be bewildering.

I think there is some leeway on prices depending on the warranty on the camera. As I understood it when I was buying the places with lower prices sell with a limited warranty, I think restricted to Thailand, whereas the higher/normal price includes a worldwide warranty. Big Camera and other Central stores obviously will fall into the latter category catering as they do to a large extent to the foreign market.

I bought a Nikon F5100 SLR on Xmas day at one of the shops in Tukcom - may have been Best or Big Camera. You are right about the warranty. There was one lady on the same floor who's prices were 2-3k cheaper but was only a "local" shop warranty. The others are world wide.

Went also to Central and generally little difference in the prices but received 4MG card in Tukcom whereas Central stores only offering 2MG included.

Also the assisitant in the store we chose seemed more knowledgable and helpful. I had researched using review sites to narrow down first otherwise it is impossible to chooses between all the different makes and models - especially as I know nothing about cameras anyway and the purchase was not for me!

I did however get back the vat when I flew out on Sunday.....

I would advise a potential camera buyer to use extreme caution when buying at tukcom or Pantip in BKK. Yes, there are reputable dealers at tukcom, that are usually the chains and have locations throughout Thailand (Powerbuy, IT, NewWave, Big Camera, etc.) and a reputation to protect. Also, they will not charge you 2-4% if you use a credit card (highly recommended). Central Festival has a better selection but not near that of BKK. If you buy a memory card at tukcom from one of the small shops there is almost a 100% chance it will be a knockoff. I was at NewWave at Central last year and over heard the conversation between the owner and some Russians that their new Iphone (the Russians) purchased at tukcom was a copy. Buyer beware.

If you're going to be in the UK anytime soon then it may be worth visiting Jessops for a deal.

They are an established camera specialist outfit ground into administration by camera phones.

The risk is that you might not be able to go back to the shop if there's an issue but there are always manufacturers guarentees & Jessops stock is most likely to be kosher

I believe the discount camera outlets are selling grey market or refurbished items.

Walked into Tukom actually on the same day as my post and bought a Nikon D5100 from the shop recommended, 3rd floor do a U turn and its right there on your right hand side. Actually asked the Thai bloke which camera he prefers Nikon / Canon etc. He has them all in his window. He mentioned the Nikon has better quality pictures. So took the deal he offered for camera + 8MB card + case etc for 18,000 baht. Thought it to be pretty good deal. Even went back a few days later for a few learning tips - Top bloke and recommended.

He mentioned the Nikon has better quality pictures.

That's an opinion not shared by many people and an extreme oversimplification.

Good advice would have been to get a cheap body, probably used, for a start and a halfway decent lens. He was trying to sell you a camera, not help you.
