Myanmar Border Crossing - Visa Overstay - Problems?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Wondering if anybody has recent experience dealing with an expired visa at the Myanmar border crossing?

I'm planning to overstay my tourist visa for 1/2 days based on reports that Thai immigration overwhelmingly tend to turn a blind eye to short-term overstays, but can change this plan and would like to know the likelihood of finding trouble/having to pay up if i stay one or two extra days.

Thanks,

Marko

Had a 9 day overstay in December (really forgot about the date), went to the border in Mae Sai, paid 4500 Bht, no problems at all. But be careful about controls on the way to Mae Sai. I have a Thai DL which I can show instead of my passport, don't know what happen if they control you on the way to the border and you have overstay.

My mother had an overstay of less than one full day and she had to pay the daily 500 Baht fine.I don't think they overlook it at all but apart from the payment is was hassle free

Don't know where you get the idea they "turn a blind eye" to short term overstays, most of the messages I've read would suggest that they pretty much always impose the fine, with the exception of flying out within 1 day of your expiry. At land borders, you don't get that 1 day leeway they will fine you 500 baht for 1 day, or 1,000 baht for 2 days. I think when people say "turn a blind eye" they mean that they treat an overstay as a very routine (hassle free) matter, not that they let you off with the fine.

So, imho, "finding trouble" = no - "fine" = yes

twice I have been there a day over and yes they turned and blind eye and I paid nothing, One time at the CNX airport I was about a month late depending on how you count the days and there they too turned a blind eye, I had the money in my pocket ready, but instead had a nice holiday with the extra money in my pocket when I got to Malaysia.

You must be a very lucky person. Everyone I have talked with had to pay every time.
