CHONBURI, Jan 9 - Over 20 fishing boats in this eastern Thai province did not go to sea this morning, claiming it was due to the government's Bt300 daily minimum wage.

Seafood prices have risen, for boat owners there refuse to pay the minimum wage.

Wasana Pismai, a fishing boat owner, said she could not bear the cost of paying the fishermen, as each boat needs five to six workers to go out fishing, while the weather has been difficult, resulting in a smaller amount of seafood to be caught. at sea.

Chon Buri merchants are now ordering seafood from Mahachai market in Samut Sakhon, southwest of Bangkok, to sell in Chon Buri's markets.

Meanwhile, Sombat Jungtrakul, Chanthaburi Border Trade Operators Club president, said Cambodian traders have ordered more Thai goods for several days, up from the previous average value of Bt30 million to Bt40 million, for they fear prices of Thai merchandise will be higher due to the. wage hike.

In a related matter, Prasartsin On-aat, honorary chairman of Thai Autoparts Manufacturers Association, said the wage rise has worried some manufacturers because of a lack of labour in the auto industry. He said some workers decided to move back to work in their hometowns as wages are now equal nationwide.

The Thai auto industry needs about 500,000 workers, and needs around 30,000 new workers annually to meet the higher demand of car manufacturing at up to 250,000 units / year.

He also urged the government to consider finding solutions to the labour shortage issue. (MCOT online news).

Thai deputy PM to ask Malaysia’s help in job relief, to ease southern violence

By Digital Media

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9 – Thailand is seeking Malaysia’s cooperation on the employment of unskilled Thai workers and exchange of Muslim religious teachers during a bilateral talk with Kuala Lumpur later today.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubumrung discussed with senior Thai officials this morning on issues to be raised in a meeting with Malaysian home affairs minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

High on the agenda is a request for Malaysia’s relaxation on its employment of Thai skilled workers and permission for unskilled Thais to seek jobs in such positions as waiters and waitresses in the neighbouring country.

Malaysia’s employment regulations subject Thai workers, especially chefs, to pay a Bt24,000 monthly tax, compelling about 150,000 Thai people to work illegally in the country.

Thailand’s request for Malaysia to hire unskilled Thai workers is aimed at creating jobs for Thai southerners, apparently an attempt to cool down the southern problem due to the local unemployment problem.

The vital issue to be raised for talks is Thailand’s request for an exchange of Muslim religious teachers with the belief that Malaysian educators disseminate the correct Islamic teachings.

Mr Chalerm was informed by governors of five southern provinces that 60 per cent of the cases of violence in the South involved personal conflict, but the public was misled that they were mostly involved with insurgency.

The deputy premier who is on a three-day visit to the neighbouring country is accompanied by a number of high-ranking Thai officials. He is scheduled to meet with Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak tomorrow.

DROUGHT

Parts of Phichit affected by severe drought

The Nation

PHICHIT: -- Drought has hit four districts of the northern province of Phichit, leading to the provincial authority declare them as a disaster zone.

Governor Chakkarin Plienwong said the declaration was issued for the droughthit districts of Muang, Saklek, Dong Charoen and Wangsai Poon. Most were not in the irrigation zone, he said.

The provincial authorities would thus work on identifying urgent measures to help those areas including bringing irrigation water from canal branches

The situation could be worse if the underground wells could not generate enough water, he said. Water trucks were prepared to go out to provide water to affected farmers.

Meanwhile Prawes Sirisilp, provincial irrigation chief, said the drought came faster and appeared more severe than in the previous years. Most of the affected farmland covering ten of thousands of rai was outside irrigation areas. So far, the irrigation office has distributed 20 water pumps to farmers affected by the drought to help alleviate the situation. The office also pumped water from the Nan River via electrical pumping stations to farmers outside the irrigation areas.
