Popular Post thetefldon
A Christmas morning visitor to the big tree in my garden. Spot Breasted Woodpecker. A slightly unusual shot-not classic woodpecker pose. Taken from 2nd floor terrace so level or above bird.

Assurancetourix
^ Birdsthatfart, worth a look, great pics Gary! Than you so much. Crazy name for a birding site I know. When I retired I decided to make birding and travel my hobby, and the name reminds me NOT to take my hobby seriously. A very relaxing and stress free hobby that is way underrated IMO. I update my flickr site regularly also: http://www.flickr.com/photos/avianphotos Great photos on your Flickr account ; Thank you

Popular Post thetefldon
This Black Collared Starling is one of a pair that frequent the area near my home. They are often seen on the ground and have a very distinctive almost trumpeting call.
Popular Post thetefldon
A new visitor to the big tree in the garden this afternoon. Racket Tailed Treepie Only got one shot which I have had to blast with PSE and over sharpen to make it viewable- not very good but I thought worth a share of this quite attractive bird for anyone who hasn't seen one. Only spotted it because the Drongos were mobbing it!

Popular Post thetefldon
Plenty of action in the big tree in my garden over the last few days with the highlight a brief visit by a pair of Black Baza! Not very photogenic though, so will have to settle with sharing this shot of a Taiga Flycatcher which is either none breeding male or female(the breeding males look a tad like and English Robin with a red chest). The only way I was certain of identity of this somewhat nondescript bird(bit like Asian Brown and several other flycatchers) was the call which is quite distinctive.

Popular Post Bredbury Blue
Just walked past this huge owl in a shopping mall animal/pet show. A beauty...I was so impressed I revisited it twice. Can anybody tell me what it is?

Popular Post thetefldon
Hanging out to dry! We had some heavy rain yesterday PM after I spotted this Greater Coucal hanging out(literally) at the top of a tree trying to dry out in the late afternoon sun. These birds are normally ground dwellers but I guess needs must
Bredbury Blue
I went back to the shopping mall today (see above), same animal/pet show and same owl (several very cute prairie dogs too); here's another photo (sorry about the orientation from my phone). I asked what is it and was told it's a Siberian Eagle Owl. Turns out that hairdressers I've been going to for years in my mooban, owned by the wife's friend (I call the husband Eddie the Eagle because he keeps eagles and owls) has one of these beautiful birds...next time I go for my haircut I'll be able to check it out.

Popular Post samuijimmy
I see that blue bird ^ around my house, quite often, but never have camera at hand before it flies off! thetefldon
Thanks for the IDs. I'm in Nakhon Nayok, on the southern edge of Khao Yai NP. Are these birds rare at all?Not particularly rare but not always easily spotted. I usually see them in my local NP's all of which are mountainous. I use Craig Robsons "Birds of Thailand & SE Asia" for reference. You can buy it online at Asia Books.

jack2964
This won't earn me a tick but still a lifer for me; Giant Nuthatch from Doi Lang shot from about 200m away. Got 1 of 2 target birds, dipped on Hume's Pheasant. But I'll be back.

Briggsy
Hanging out to dry! We had some heavy rain yesterday PM after I spotted this Greater Coucal hanging out(literally) at the top of a tree trying to dry out in the late afternoon sun. These birds are normally ground dwellers but I guess needs must Is there any possibility this was a Lesser Coucal? When I have seen them, it is very often when they are sunbathing. The head looks like it is halfway through a moult, perhaps between non-breeding (brownish head) and breeding (blueish black head) plumage. A photo takes away the concept of size unless a comparable object is also in the shot.
