Police aid Vietnamese victim of sex-trafficking

The Nation

SA KAEW: -- Thai border officials on Tuesday detained a 28-year-old Vietnamese woman who said she was attempting to flee home after being tricked into prostitution in Malaysia by her boyfriend.

The distraught woman was caught attempting to cross the border into Cambodia illegally at Rong Kluea Market in Sa Kaew's Aranyaprathet district.

The woman told police yesterday that after her Vietnamese boyfriend of three months had promised her a high-paying job in Malaysia, they travelled from Vietnam to Cambodia to Thailand, via Sa Kaew, and on into Malaysia via the Su-ngai Kolok border point. She said the boyfriend then seized her passport and cash, detained her and forced her to work at a nightclub. After overhearing him say he would send her to a brothel, she fled and tried to find her way back home.

Police have sought the Vietnamese Embassy's help to send her back to Ho Chi Minh City.

In related news, the Police Anti-Human Trafficking Division announced the arrest of three Thais, two women and one man. Paweenut Kankrasang, 36, is suspected of luring women into the sex trade in Bahrain with false promises of high-paying massage jobs, while Tiwa Asucheewa, 24, was caught allegedly delivering a 17-year-old girl to a customer at a Kalasin hotel. Wirat Ninphupha, 61, is accused of taking cash from victims in return for the promise of a high-paid job in the Philippines. He was arrested after being ordained as a monk in Roi Et's Chiang Kwan district.

House owner questioned over fire

The Nation

30197607-01_big.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The police are interrogating the owner of the house where the fire on Tuesday night allegedly started and ended up destroying more than 20 homes in the densely populated Boon Chusri Community near the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) in Bangkok's Din Daeng area.

During a forensic check on the site, police called on the house owner, taxi driver Boonrit Oumpravit, 61, and other members of his family to ask about the cause of the fire. Boonrit said he was on his way home when the fire broke out and later he was far too busy helping his relatives out of the house. He said he did not know what caused the blaze.

Meanwhile, district officials provided food, medical treatment and temporary shelter to some 300 residents. The ONCB also opened its offices to provide temporary housing for 40 families.

Arin Toh-ae, 10, who lives in the area said that he went outside when the fire broke out and returned to find his home burned down. "There is nothing left, not even my school uniform. Now we stay at my grandma's house," he said.

Panel to hear 'Nua Mek 2' testimony

The Nation

30197608-01_big.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The House committee on political development, media and public participation agreed yesterday to summon related parties to provide information about the controversial cancellation of the television drama "Nua Mek 2" last Friday.

The panel, chaired by Ubon Ratchathani MP Supachai Srila, will summon Channel 3 executives, the channel's committee authorised to suspend programme broadcasting, producers of the programme and chairman of the NBTC Broadcasting Commission Natee Sukonrat next week. It will also ask to watch all episodes of the drama, including those that have not been aired.

At the panel meeting yesterday, Democrat MP Watchara Phetchthong also suggested that former PM Thaksin Shinawatra's son Panthongtae and PM's Office Minister Varathep Ratanakorn, who supervises MCOT, the concessionaire of Channel 3, be summoned and asked if they were behind the abrupt cancellation of the political parody. Pheu Thai MP Supol Fong-ngam, however, argued that the panel should not assume that these two men were involved before questioning those involved at the primary level first.
