Survey reveals youngsters want adults to stop cheating, be good role models

BANGKOK: -- Good children are the country's future and smart children help the nation develop" - this was the National Children's Day motto set by former PM Field Marshall Thanom Kittikachorn in 1973 and an Abac poll has discovered that it is the biggest favourite among children.

In a survey conducted in Bangkok recently, 1,368 youngsters between the ages of 10 and 15 were asked to choose a motto they liked the most. The list ran from the slogan set by former PM Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram in 1965 to the most recent one by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Up to 89.6 per cent chose Thanom's slogan, followed by 88.9 per cent who preferred this year's slogan: "Uphold Discipline, Enhance Knowledge, and Bring Thailand towards Asean". The survey also learned that 60 per cent of the youngsters wanted adults to be good role models, while 57.9 per cent want older people to be honest.

Many government agencies yesterday set up booths at Government House to mark Children's Day on Saturday. Queue cards will be handed out to youngsters and parents who can visit the prime minister's office and sit on her chair. Also, 50 of the 7,500 New Year cards addressed to the PM from youngsters will be put on display.

Another Archeeva (Vocational) poll discovered that up to 40.18 per cent of its 1,214 respondents said they want a mobile phone, computer or video games for Children's Day, while 31.46 per cent prefer scholarships.

Meanwhile, a shipment of gifts from people across the nation arrived in Narathiwat yesterday for children in the restive South, whose biggest wish is an end to violence.

Separately, 728 outstanding youngsters from across the country were led by Education Minister Phongthep Thepkanjana and Deputy Education Minister Sermsak Pongpanich to meet Yingluck on Wednesday.

There you are Yingluck. The kids have responded by asking you and ilk for some honesty.

Sounds like a fair exchange to me.

Is it just me or does that somehow not seem right in a way?

Thanom a role model?

This must be a joke, yes?

Sadly, and worryingly, it's not.

"lessons on surviving a chemical or bio-nuclear attack and other survival techniques"....

Seems like some odd activities to me as well. cheesy.gif Amazing Thailand indeed.......

Kids are not stupid. I remember when I was a kid. By the age of 12 I hated many many adults because they would lie to me or I would see them lie and cheat others.

I can only recall one adult who was honest with me and others when I was a kid. This particular adult had and still has my utmost respect.

Far too many adults do not respect kids enough and far too many adults do not realize that they lose the respect of kids when they lie to them or others.

Most kids start out honest and adults with low integrity slowly deteriorate their faith in people.

In short..........talk the talk and walk the walk. Say what you mean and mean what you say.

Yes it does make you wonder what goes through some peoples minds.

Perhaps by the time these kids are old enough to be "crowd controllers" at least they will be able to spell "Life Fire" correctly?

And as for the Jiew (Little) Rangers, becoming "security guards" for the day at Government House on Childrens Day 2011

If 'Proud Mary' does get into difficulties they can always turn it side on and they've got their floodwater dam.

I doubt if any Thais are actually questioning this even though it should be. Just like they do not question or think about wearing swastika or dressing up as Nazis at a school event which happen a few years ago.

Yes, there certainly seems to be too much involvement by the military. A little more emphasis on educational toys would be far more appropriate. They should be given 'lie boxes' (similar to swear boxes) and asked to get their close adult relatives to contribute.

That's right. Teach the kids how to use guns. Now for a lesson in managed corruption. Or perhaps, a course in how to use money to stay out of prison. The future is bright.

What a bunch of liars,

Have had three people in 4 months

ask me to do their english home work.

No wonder they can't speak english.

Its no wonder that they are so backwards in this country.

They want everything to be handed to them without any effort.

I understand that in the end this motto was chosen:

รักษาวินัย ใฝ่เรียนรู้ เพิ่มพูนปัญญา นำพาไทยสู่อาเซียน

Be Disciplined, Enhance Knowledge, and Bring Thailand toward ASEAN

Google has it on it's home page today for users logged in on a Thai IP:

I never noticed that. In fact going by that more chose Yingluck's.

You're wrong about one thing though. It doesn't say 89.6% it says Up to 89.6 per cent. which also show what a mess this is.

I just hope the kids will still think the same way when they become adults.

Also essential skill for shooting relatives (e.g. ex wives) at the dinner table..

I could name an agency run by "adults" who cheat Foreign English teachers in Thailand, but I'm not allowed
