Best Place To Buy New Or Second Hand Honda Motorbike?

Recommended Posts

Looking to buy a fully automatic Honda motorbike in Chiang Mai, just one of those scooter types to get around the city (I'm thinking they are called Honda Click?)

Can anyone suggest the best place to purchase one in Chiang Mai? Should I stick to the Honda Dealerships or are there any reputable motorbike shops I could check out that might be cheaper than the dealerships?

Obviously I would like to purchase from a shop that's not dodgy and won't pull a fast one over on me so hopefully someone who's lived in Chiang Mai a lot longer can steer me in the right direction (pun intended tongue.png ).

Since bikes (and cars) hold their value, best to go with a dealer for peace of mind of not being bent over, or ending up with a dodgy bike that's been pranged. You'll also get a warranty and can sell it back to them. There are several in town... I think the main one is on Thanon Kaew Nawarat (between the river and bus station). The Click 125 goes well or go 'upmarket' and get a PCX.

Big Honda dealer over the bridge on the way to the bus station.

They have all models in shock, no waiting, pay and drive it away.

Don't forget to take a certificate of residence from immigration and your passport with you.

I'm not following this at all. Why would it matter if a g/f comes along? You are not going to be able to buy the m/c without the documents.

Well, I've only lived here 3.5 years and purchased (new) 2 motorcycles, two scooters and (second hand) three scooters - all by way of playing in retirement with my abilities to ride (declining, alas). It's hard to tell about your best bet unless we know your intentions. For example, I have a friend bought a new Suzuki 4 speed (if you can call it that) 125, new then, that has worked flawlessly for years; it was somewhat cheaper then, so he cannot lose money. I mean that I do not automatically agree about buying new, unless you'll be here a while, where cost-effectiveness is assured.

*Two remarks above may be confusing; the girlfriend, if she is Thai, can own a bike, whereas you cannot if you're here on a tourist visa.

Still, Hondas are your best bet and the presently new 125 Click-i is quick as they come, if a bit smaller than some other 125cc models. Hondas in our town lose less in the short term or long term on resale; locals adore 'em.

But if I were going to be here for a short while, and if even that was doubtful, and were I careful of my money, I'd keep in mind that repairs in this nation are dirt cheap. I once bought an underpowered old Yamaha automatic for 20K, but immediately took it to the official Yamaha shop and had the drive belt and its works fixed and a wheel's spokes fixed, plus a tire and tube replaced. It worked wonderfully, these bikes being almost bullet-proof. Overall, I lost little when selling later. But it was slooow!

In sum, there is a second hand market behind a grocery called Rimping, on the Maejo Road (1001, this market being to the north one immediate turn beyond a McDonalds, inward a few hundred meters and under a great roof on the right) where, at the very least, one can get an overview of all bikes and their second-hand prices. Morover, some dealers there have been in place for years and have good reputations. It is always open on Saturdays and Sundays (holidays excepted). I would buy there and save thousands, but I have an idea now what I'd look to see for my needs (not that of others). By and large, new or wisely chosen second hand, we save over rentals pretty fast.

Rubbish. Put it in your name. Why would someone put their vehicle in another person's name? Are you saying there are people here in Chiang Mai that are so pitifully stupid that they can't figure out how to put their passport in their pocket and stop by Immigration for a Certificate of Residence on their way to buying the motorcycle??? Come on...

I think my comment was taken out of context...I wasn't saying 'put in her name', I was just explaining what the previous poster was implying! ie. taking the p**s out of the many falang who put the new bike in the new GF's name! But as we all know, no-one is that "pitifully stupid". whistling.gif

given your inability to recognize when someone is joking even when it is explicitly spelled out for you using an emoticon, i would have to say yes, there are some pretty thick people in thee Greater Chaing Mai area

Totally false information. You can own a bike with a tourist visa. Just go to the middle counter at immigration with your passport and fill out a form to get a certificate of residence. You should bring a letter from the serviced condo you live in or the contract if you rent a house/apartment. You have to pay 500 baht and you don't need to wait in line like people do when they extend their visa. Bring two passport photos also. This certificate is valid for 30 days. Afterwards go shopping and bring the certificate when you purchase the bike.

I bought a beaut from a farang who's job had him getting out of Dodge on short notice. One farang owner, low miles, 2 years old and a little more than 1/2 price of new.

Try the classifieds right here for a while. Maybe put a want ad in the classifieds. Be reasonable.
