acc.jpg

PATTAYA:--A pickup truck, littered with Beer cans, is thought to have caused a major traffic accident this morning, injuring 7 people in Pattaya

Witnesses called the emergency services to second road in Jontien in the early hours of Monday morning after a pickup truck, carrying five people is said to have side swiped a minivan.

Cutting equipment was used to free the injured from the wreckage as the two people in the minivan were in a critical condition. The Chevrolet Pickup was also cut open as the driver and passenger were trapped. In the rear of the pickup were three more passengers, also injured.

Who is that gentleman in the picture associated with? If I have a problem, that's the guy I'd like to use rather than the local "meat" wagon.

Why, because he's a foreigner and LOOKS like a knowledgable guy with the right printings on his white polo shirt ?

He's white he MUST be a good doctor, right ?

Have you seen the staff on the meat wagons? Have you seen them in action?

I didn't think he was a doctor, but was hoping a trained EMT.

I didn't want to slash you off, I know what those " rescue " teams are manned with and am horrified by the idea I may ever have the misfortune to end up in the back of those trucks.

My point was actually that too many people here are wrongly impressed by those foreigners who come here and PRETEND to be a medic, policeman, lawyer, doctor or whatever function they would even not be allowed to refer to in the real world.

I don't know if this is the case with this particular guy, but my experience in the past 2 decades in Pattaya says it has a fat chance to be so.

Clearly he is with the emergency services.

Why the "local-bashing"? Those local emergency services provide a very necessary service that would even assist you if, heaven forbid, you were ever in a situation to need them.

"Witnesses stated that the pickup truck was speeding through the city when it hit the minivan at a set of traffic lights. Police examined the scene and the truck driver was cautioned before being sent with the others for emergency treatment"

"driver was cautioned". Such undiluted nonsense. Booked for grievous bodily harm or worse would have been the charge for starters in many countries. How do we get people to drive safely if each time an accident occurs no severe jail sentencing follows. Apart from a one week blitz each year there are no community info packs for adult education, no school education on the subject, no credible driving schools, a licensing authority which is wedded to tea money........Drivers who maim or kill on Thailand's roads get a gentle slap on the wrist, a couple of small news items discuss it and on things go until the next body count ie: unless your a foreigner. Speaking of "gentleman in the picture" I think it is idiotic and very anal of anyone to speculate if the rescue worker is skilled or a farang etc..etc...Apart from adding nothing of value to the discussion such comments fail to give credit to rescue teams who daily and sometimes several times a day scoop up bodies from roads and condo's - along with body parts which sometimes need to be separately bagged. Some of the puerile comments above on the rescue workers display low IQ and pure idiocy.

Thailand, locked into a Third world mindset seems well-positioned to remain a cheap factory for OECD outsourcing. The near absence of health & safety, town planning, embedded corruption, very low implementation of any laws (of which there is no shortage) hardly helps Thailand vault into the same league as Spore or Malaysia......... and for people who believe that Thailand is not a third-world country you may need to first convince the IMF, World Bank, ADB & Transparency Intll !!

As far as I know Sawang Boriboon have farang volunteers, though I'm sure that their local volunteers are extremely competent also, and they all seem to do a good job regardless of colour.

I certainly have a lot more respect for anyone who volunteers for that job than I do for police volunteers.

One of the problems with Sawang Boriboon and all the other Pok Tek Tung foundations is that their ambulances are just empty shells with flashing lights on top. There is virtually no paramedic equipment in there. Ok for transporting corpses though. Whack up the air con!

It seems to be hit and miss with those rescue organizations. I have seen capable guys trained to at least the basic paramedic level. People who do it out of a genuine desire to help others. The Sawang Boriboon EMS vans are very well equipped and staffed with the best people they have!

Unfortunately it seems a majority of them are in it for the kicks, seeing the crashes first hand and racing around town with lights and sirens blaring.

When a friend of mine had a rather serious car crash very close to where I was, I came at the scene first, he was trapped in the car, conscious but no feeling/movement anywhere in his body below his neck, which is a pretty clear indication of some sort of spinal injury.

Rescue guys came and wanted to start slap my friends head around to see if he was conscious! Best way of putting somebody in a wheelchair rest of his life :(

Shoved them away (they became aggressive at that point, luckily there were a fair few bystanders by then), waited until the Bkk Pattaya EMS van showed up, who did an excellent job of stabilizing the victim with all sorts of braces/supports, before extracting him from the car (at Bkk Pattaya hospital prices, but who cares in such a situation!)
