How Would I Proceed To Change My Childs First Name ?

Featured Replies

I have attempted to speak with someone at the American consulate in Chiang Mai but currently there is no one to speak with concerning non emergency situations. I would like to know if anyone has any knowledge of legally changing a child's first name only who is 2 years old on all of his documents. My son was born in Thailand and has his Thai and American passport in addition to a social security number from America. No one has called him by his American name so that would not be an issue; I am changing his first name to honor my father who currently is sickened with cancer and will not be with us much longer. Thank You,

Moved to family and children section.

You want to change his name for the US or for Thailand or both?

To change his name in Thailand is relatively easy and done at the amphur. If you want to have it chenged in the US, that is a different matter and the consulate/embassy can't help you as it is governt by state law, not federal law.

Update: Changing my son's first name in Thailand was simply and had taken
less then an hour and we were given a certificate in addition to the revised
house book which reflected the change. The American consulate in Chiang Mai had
been very helpful in which they required to see the Thai name change certificate
in addition to his birth certificate and filling out a few forms and new
passport application. When this is all processed and the new passport is issued
they give you a form that states these changes in which you send off to the
Social Security Office. The Fee on the U.S. side is approx. $ 105.00

Glad everything went smooth and thanks for your reporting back. Might help others in the same situation.

hoping to do that same thing - couple of questions ....

were you changing his name from a thai name to a western name or ...?

am i right in thinking his original birth certificate remained the same, but is now accompanied by a document stating the name change which when produced allows the issuance of a new passport?
