Extended Layover In Shanghai - What To Do?

Featured Replies

If one were to have somewhere between 6 and 12 hours to kill at PVG, anything to do other than wander around the airport shops or try to nap? Are visa-on-arrivals available? Has anybody ventured off away from the airport?

Beijing now have 72 hr VOA's available for about 40 -odd countries, not sure about any other airports.

I'd take a good book - my experience is that Chinese Intl airports are very big and efficient, but poor places to spend more than an hour or two. Even the business lounges are pretty crap IMHO.

Pudong is about an hour from the city centre, so not much to see around the airport. I always like to visit the Bund when in Shanghai. Google it.

With your onward travel ticket you can get a transit visa and head into the city. Shanghai is a great place to visit, one of my top five cities globally Take the Maglev train into the city and head to the Water Front (The Bund), then walk around the West City/Shanghai Old-town; it is worth your time.

Details here regarding the transit visa:

I took a cab and cruised the city back then (not sure what the fare is now) but its worth asking.
