Surely there is an element of naievity here in believing that price rises won't eventually affect tourism ? OK so Hans from Hamburg, Bill from Birmingham may continue to return but when they are back home they are probably pointing out to anyone who will listen that LOS is not cheap anymore. From Euope at least the flight prices continue to increase, its one thing to pay out for an expensive flight if your destination is cheap, quite another if it's still expensive when you get there.

By your reasoning UK and Europe should have no tourism because they are not cheap.

It would be interesting to see the tourist figures over the last 5yrs to see if he is right to worry. But I'm sure I read recently that the TAT announced record figures for last year and if so he has nothing to worry about! Five years ago one pound got you about 73-74 baht compared to 46 today and one Euro got about 55 compared to 39 today. People will still come regardless.

but you can buy currency at a cheaper rate now...Then cut ones losses a tad and not return... Tourists are always looking for better package deals and south east asia has a host of other locations...Personally I much prefer Indonesia...and 9600 Rup to the dollar makes my cost of living as a resident a lot easier..

Can I give you a ride to the airport. You probably can't afford a taxi.

Do you have a meter? Hope your work permits in order!

Does one need a work permit to export ancient foreign artifacts?

I don't know much about it but

Remember that Thailand supported the Khmer Rouge even after details of the genocide came to light and after the Vietnamese ousted Pol Pot and his evil regime. Pol Pot lived with the protection of Thai special forces in a mansion in Trat province in the 80's with the full support of the Thais, who also trained and supported Khmer Rouge Cadres conducting strikes against Cambodian and Vietnamese forces in Western Cambodia from safe havens within Thailand. The Thai government also supported the Khmer Rouge as the legitimate government of Cambodia in the UN.

Ironic that the biggest defenders of the place are invariably those that know the least about it.

The Thai government also supported the Khmer Rouge as the legitimate government of Cambodia in the UN.

Thought I answered this one.. must have forgot to post...so did the UK and US governments.

Australia, China and US supported them in the UN. France abstained. Not sure how Britain voted.

Yep - and they spend their money differently. That's why bar takings are down in tourist areas, and 7/11's are doing well.

I've got a great little mom and pop shop that sells me an ice cold Chang for 40 baht. I sit right out front and watch the skirts go by...biggrin.png Long Live Cheap Charlie's. thumbsup.gif

There may be more tourists coming here but I think it would be fair to say that a lot of them are now coming from different countries and a lot in cheap package tours.

Where I came from we used to watch tour buses pull up and disgorge their passingers who would all take photos then pile back in the bus again.

The only ones who got anything from that type of tourist were the hotels where they stayed and the bus Co's.

I suspect it is the same in TL.

Last time I was in Pattaya the place was full of Ruskies and people from NZ and OZ have no problem because their currencys has not dropped and are still about the same compared to a couple of years ago.

Seems to me that the Baht hasnt riser a lot but US$, Euro and Pound have fallen.

Anyway why in Kitterat complaining when tourism is supposed to be up by so many percent?

Is the GBP heading for parity with the Indonesian Rupiah?

Brits better get ready for some real rude shocks according to BBC. Currency speculators are taking an interest in the GBP.

According to BBC report on GBP fall:

"The falls came after Bank of England policymaker Martin Weale said that sterling may need to weaken further to bolster the UK economy.

Currency speculators are also betting that sterling will fall, data shows".

US problems obvious, Economists have predicted that the UK will lose its coveted AAA credit rating this year. Standard & Poor’s (S&P) maintained Thailand’s existing credit rating at BBB+ and forecasted a stable outlook for the country going forward. I don't know if that answers your question or not. Maybe if you could give some more information as to what you are asking.
