Featured Replies

This week end brings in the Chinese New Year.... February 9 th (Saturday)

A worth while event to attend for those of use who live here and tourists! thumbsup.gif

The Maenam event is always colourful (a little noisy with the firecrackers too) w00t.gif ..... Located at Soi 4 where the Chinese lanterns are hanging!!!

I am not sure what other areas of Samui or KP celebrate this, if you know, please post!

Here is a pic from last year's event... it is one of the images used on the TV calendar (by yours truly wink.png )

Samuijimmy made a booboo, now revised & adjusted as per his request. It is on Saturday the 9th & not Sunday the 10th.

According to a few people i talked to in Maenam it's on the 10th. Bit confused now..blink.png

According to the Thai Visa calendar it's on Sunday 10th?

Thanks Rooo... thumbsup.gif

It seems to depend on who you speak too,w00t.gif I had been told the 10th which is what I originally posted .... but I think that is new years day.... ?

I did go down to Gai's Pharmacy on Soi 4 Maenam, and asked her, because I knew she's involved with the Chinese community ...

She's the one who said the celebration and dragon dancers would be Saturday the 9th Usually 4 to 5 pm a good time to head down.

If I hear anything different will be sure to update!!!! whistling.gifthumbsup.gif

Hey, thanks for the info! I will be there like last year! Hope I see some of you!

The 9th is New Year's Eve. Hence the party. Just like western new year,

You're not Wong there.

9th is the eve and traditionally the day when all the family gets together for the reunion meal aka massive traffic in china etc similar to the importance of the annual thanksgiving or Christmas dinner or Aussie day BBQ lunch

10th is the actual 1st day of the CNY lunar calendar and marks a day of visiting close relatives and paying your respect.

There is usually a pretty good show of lights and fireworks.... after sunset and before the band (s) start... w00t.gifbiggrin.png

It's a "must see" event! (ear muffs might be needed!) rolleyes.gif

(Ahem . . .)

"Preparations tend to begin around a month before the date (much like that which happens in the lead-up to Christmas in the West). During this time people start buying presents, material for decorations and food and clothing. A huge clean-up gets underway and houses are scrubbed from top to bottom. This ritual is to sweep away all traces of bad luck or disappointment from the old year. Doors and window frames are often given a new coat of paint then decorated with paper-cuts and scripts with proverbs about happiness, wealth and longevity printed on them.

The climax of the celebration is known as Nian, but this actually only lasts for two days, occasionally three. (This year it's the 9th and 10th.)This is the period when you’ll see streets closed to traffic and processions going from door to door, the feasting (often in the form of a big street party in the evening) and the skies filled with fireworks. But the whole season traditionally extends from the middle of the previous twelfth month up to the middle of the month after Nian. And towards the end of this time – 15 days after Nian – the ‘official’ end of the New Year is marked by the gentle Festival of Lanterns."

Hi,

Sorry, I don t understand, is it the 9th (today) or the 10th?

Most says it is the 9th, and Pomme and Samuijimmy says it is the 10th...?

Around 4/5PM is a good time to go?

Thanks

Yeah is a bit of confusion for sure, It was Gai Pharmacy that said it was today, she's usually pretty reliable..... (not this time, I think!) w00t.gif but the big street and Temple party seems to be on the 10th (tomorrow Sunday)

There will be smaller dragon and fire crackers going off for a few days... but it's the main event that is worth seeing... thumbsup.gif

If I hear anything different, I will repost... but the consensus with others seems to be for tomorrow !!!

4 to 5 pm usually a good time to go...

The big event is Sunday 10 th... for SURE!!!! thumbsup.gif

Even the locals have been confused this year... on when it would be.... blink.png

Anyone driving by car or even motor bike, will have difficulty parking close to Soi 4 so be prepared for a bit of extra walking! whistling.gif
