No, but thanks for asking! And thanks for your posting :D

By the way, I went to Mae Sai to-day and I saw a long convoy of rot-i-teng (I guess about fifty!)with banners in Thai language teng-tenging direction south. A police car in front. They were also carrying big posters with the portrait of the prime-minister. On the way to Sanaam Luang I suppose. The area around Maechan counts a lot of wealthy supporters of the prime minister.

They all must be deaf before they arrive (not these supporters, because they probably fly in business class, but the people on the rot-i-tengs).

Yeah, it's pretty quiet in here, compared to the C.M. forum.

If I may suggest so, the C.R. forum might benefit from expanding it to "C.R. and Northern Provinces" os similar.

There is the "Isan" forum, why not a "Northern" title, this would also invite some farming topics? A few of us are spread out in the sticks...

Hey, we like to be distinct from ChiangMai, and MaeHongSon and Nan are other worlds entirely (no? sure seem so to me, much as some stuff might seem same or similar). And anyone in Payao would use this forum anyway!

Years ago my name became simplified to "Jo Ba" then Crazy Joe opened his bar... Now we have Johpa... And I thought Daves, Johns and Richards had name rivalry problems! :o:D

Yesterday went out by the elephant camp. many signs in Thai expressing local support for our beloved CEO. But, they were clearly mass produced! Very nice, white and handsome signs indeed. hmmm... :D

Well, since we can't self-promote, argue or discuss sex to much here, how can anyone expect this to be eventful? Kind of like Chiangrai itself - semi-loveable, but hardly a heart-attack!

Dear Unknown_User,

From Maechan a six lane super highway is leading all the way to the best DVD shop of Maesai.

I am going on Monday. You are welcome to join!

Anybody who has to do some stampwork is welcome to come with me. Just PM me and I will pick you up somewhere. I was thinking to leave 10, 11 in the morning, do the formalities and have a beer at John's, excuse me, a nice meal at John's.

Dear Zapp,

We are on our own. It would be very nice if some expats in Mae Sai and Chiang Khong would join.

I will talk to (Thai) John on Monday. Victor in Chiang Khong is back to Luxemburg for a while.

Chownah is our agricultural specialist. Sometimes he is horrible, sometimes he is brilliant.

Dear Joel,

Commercial self-promoting is against the rules of this forum. But if I say that you did a great job in writing your book about Chiang Rai it isn't self promoting. So I say: Joel, you did a great job and you were the first to think about doing such a thing. It certainly will not have been easy to gather all the information. The result is great.

And yes, sex as a subject would be great fun. Most people like it, but there is some kind of taboo on it. So we have to keep up the image that we are no interested at all. That's part of the game so to say.

But arguing?

A forum without arguing is like a somtam without pepper!

Thanks to all of you. I also feared a sudden death of our forum.

Am I allowed to report that I have a couple new books out?

Interesting article on BKK's nightlife on Thaivisa.com today. Our's here certainly has slowed down, but as I recall (dimly, through short-term memory diminishment and too much long-term historical involvement maybe) once tourists are gone and things really settle down, strangely, is when the good times will mysteriously roll. Songkran though, is certainly not what I mean :D:D

wanted to put in more of these sily faces but the "show all" button only worked once...

Oh - for 'illegal' VCDs and DVDs, be sure to demand to see them put on - there are now little screens to show you what you're buying is not just cartoons or pop music. But I'm sure the Lucky for Morlboro switch is still on with amazing sleight of hand! :o:D:D:D

Right.

The honourable thing for me to do is not to post here any more, I'd only spoil the 'distinct' Chiang Rai flavour of this forum. :D

Good luck with hopefully more than 1 post in 3 days. :D:o

Please continue to post in this forum.

Chiang Rai should be distinct from other forums and also welcomes posters from other regions of Thailand and from around the world. Hot Season has come early and it’s the end of the school year and vacation time for some – a bit of a lull in postings is natural just like the ups and downs of a stock market. I would encourage the many expats who read the forum regularly to offer a post or two. Don’t worry about your language skills since not many people can write fluently in their non-native language.

Thanks Mymechew!

If Zapp would be member of a forum about orchids, would he insist that human sex should be on topic?

I don't think so. So why the Chiang Rai forum?

It would be a pity if Zapp wouldn't post anymore, but we have to respect his choice.

I can think about many reasons not to post here, but being disencouraged to write about sex?

Come on Zapp!

This forum exists now for seven months. The more than 2000 postings give a lot of information about Chiang Rai. The total of views is more than 70,000. We don't have a newspaper in Chiang Rai, so this forum is actually the only medium we have to exchange information.

And to have a laugh once i a while!

We have a nice expat community in Chiang Rai which is welcoming to new members.

Anybody who asks a question gets answers, to the best of our abilities and newcomers get an idea where to meet other expats.

Because this forum is very new many people don't know about it. And Chiang Rai is a small town.

Very few expats live here compaired to Phuket, Pattaya or Bangkok.

So it is a small forum and it will always be.

Any criticism on me as the moderator of it I will take very serious. So don't hesitate to air it.

Thanks for the kind words.

I would have replied earlier, but was on 'holiday'. :o

The comment about sex was a tongue in cheek joke, though I noticed yesterday a harmless enquiry about a bar was closed temporarily.

I value this forum, specially Limbo's dedication to make it interesting - no criticism for him, a very reasonable mod and enthusiastic poster. :D

My critic, or rather suggestion, was about the format of this forum section. I'd welcome a "Northern Provinces" forum, whithin with C.M. and C.R. could have their own subforums.

I would probably have more to post in such forum. As it is now, I don't really 'belong' to the C.R. group.

So I was a bit miffed when the distinctness of C.R. was pointed out, - sorry, nothing serious.

Btw, is there a regular expat meeting place in the town center? I'll be in C.R. end of the month

Welcome back Zapp!

Chiang Rai is a small town (I hate to say it, but if we would be in the same forum as Chiang Mai we would be seen as a suburb of it, in spite of the 190 kms inbetween). We wouldn't survive the 'overkill' of Chiang Mai.

I don't know exactly the meaning of the word 'distinct'. I would call it 'different'.

The expat-community of Chiang Rai is like a small village in a small town.

Bo's Place is without any doubt the main expat place in town (closed on Mondays).

I have got a lot of criticism for advertising it. But I don't consider it advertising.

It is just the way it is!

Saturdays and Sundays the oldtimers are there.

I am very happy to say that it is not the style of 'how long have you been here' or 'when did you come the first time' style of people. A very open and pleasant atmosphere.

Any information you need about Chang Rai, Erwin, Bo's friend, will give to you.

If you are German you will find 'Funny House' at the same street at a distance of about hundred meters. It's run by Klaus and Kitty.

Both places are on the main road not far from the busstation (4 to 5 hundred metres). Go to the Da Vinci Italian Restaurant (excellent, one of the few foreign run places with most Thai customers) and turn to the left, you can't miss them. Funny House comes first and Bo's second at the right side of the road.

Otherwise PM me when you are coming.

It is the main street, the Pahonyotin Road, which paralells the Thanon Yed Yod (the street of 'carnal desires' as the locals call it). It is the big street when you come from the busstation.

The Yed Yod is not as bad as its reputation. Actually it is not bad at all.

OK, what's bad?

The Chiang Rai Forum is now existing for one year.

Time to make up the balance:

A total of postings of 2838 (original postings + replies, 90 percent more or less on-topic), which is about 237 a month.

The total number of views is 131.460, which is 10.955 a month.

I think it is not bad for a little town like this.

And to all who have been criticizing the forum or me as its moderator I want to say two things:

1) This forum has been moderating itself for 99,99 percent.

2) The only way to influence it and to steer it in the direction you prefer, is to contribute to it.

With other words: Improve or approve!

My 2 cents ...

I must admit that any time I am blessed by the sight of Our Esteemed Moderator’s (OEM) name I perform a high wai in his honour. His exceptional diplomatic skills and towering intellect leave me humbled. I suspect that most members of this forum would agree that we could find no better moderator than the Drs. Limbo.

Thanks, Limbo.

What's the name of the street?

I usually hang around the street where "Crazy Joe's" and a few other bars and guesthouses are.

Bo's is on Pahonyothin, sorta parallel to the Superhighway, a block east of Jet Yot, the Street with Crazy Joe's (and Elephant Bar and many others). Jet Yod turns where it doesn't turn, to meet Pahonyothin, which also turns, to meet the superhwy (again...) Nice that we have city planners (who thought to give us a ring road, move the bus station and even widen some of the terribly congested soi mouths popular oversized pick-ups can hardly maneuver through, with their non-existant loads... saw a 'sip-law' with 22 wheels truning at Doi Khao Quai intersection - Doi Kha Okay the sign says - yesterday - clearly going to Pahonyothin where it would block traffic again, trying to turn... am I babbling yet?)

So far no mention on this site that I've noticed of CommuniThai Community Center at Bandu,

by the perhaps wonderfully convenient alternative n-s road from there to the airport and up by the Sports Stadium, allowing by-pass of Ha-yaek cluster-###### (whoops, can I say that?)... Did I mention Superhighway, Pahonyothin, Jet Yod and Old Airport Road (one block on over west) pretty much supply all our n-s traffic? It is wonderful of our non-planners, though, not to extend Old Airport road onto the Old Runway, one of CR's finest features...!!!
