One Year Multi Entries Non-Immigrant Ed Visa

Featured Replies

Good Morning everybody,

I have got a one year multiple entries ED Visa which is valid until Nov 2013.

The question is:

After the first 90 days in this country shall I go to the Cambodia border to get a new 90 days or to the immigration office at Changwattana?

Which is advisable? I'm really confused.

Thanks a lot. More power!

Before the end of 90 days, the student must go to the immigration office and renew the visa at the cost of 1,900 THB. But the student must collect the document from the school and handover it to the local immigration officer. This will be done during your another 90 days visa extension. The visa must be renewed every 90 days thereafter, but, the student does not have to leave the country!

That makes a critical difference.

An EXTENSION probably requires you to do 90 reporting in country at your local immigration.

An actual VISA (usually you get them out of country) would require doing a border run to get another exit re-entry.

So first it's important to know for sure what you actually have ... a multi entry one year visa or an extension of your current visa for one year because of your "ED visa'

Many people make a mistake and call the extension a visa ... and they are different things.

Thanks Asiaexpat for your reply.

I'm wondering what is the use to apply for a one year multiple entries then. A single entry non-immigrant ED will have do the trick.

Thanks IMA_Farang for your reply.

I got the one year multi entries non-immigrant ED visa from Paris before I came to bkk. Yes you are right the word "extension" is confusing. I did not use it in my first post.

The Thai embassy at Paris told me to go for a border run while my school in bkk asks me to process at the immigration! I don't know where to stand!!

It is up to you how you do it.

You can keep using the visa and make a border run every 90 days to get another 90 day entry.

Or with paperwork from school go to immigration during the last 30 days of any 90 day entry from your visa for an extension of stay (1900 baht) and make address reports every 90 days as well.

If I were you, I'd use the border run possibilities until you get the last 90 days. During those last 90 days you start the process with your school to extend your permission of stay based on your ED-visa before this visa expires.

AFAIK, a border run is easier than the hustle at immigration.

Thanks ubonjoe for your reply.

would I lose the multi entries visa if I process to the immigration? I read old posts in thaivisa.com talking about that.

I really need this multi entries visa in order to travel in august.

You would lose any extension of stay with travel without a re-entry permit but if they did not mark your visa used when extending your stay it could be used for the new entry. But I would not bother with immigration extensions and tell school paperwork not required until you are on your last entry and then extend during the next year. You have already paid for the one year visa so as long as you do not mind a border trip every 3 months (or less if you want to travel anyhow) it should serve you well.

You would not loose the multiple entry visa. It would still valid until it expires.

If you do the extension you can get a re-entry permit (single 1000 baht) that would allow you to leave and re-enter for as long as your extension is valid. Since you are probably only going to get a 90 day extension it might be best to just use the visa for a re-entry and then extend again during the last 30 days of that entry.

Thank you Everybody for your valued advice.

Sorry but I fail to see how doing a border run would be less hassle than going to Immigration?

The OP simply collects the relevant paperwork from his school, it is the school who prepares the paperwork needed not the student, the OP then goes to Immigration to get his passport stamped for another 90 days with no hassle as long as the School has prepared the paperwork correctly, surely this is less hassle then doing a border run?

Some Schools will go to Immigration for you, deal with the staff and get the 90 days for you.

He also has to pay 1,900 baht on each visit and make 90 day address reports - so for many - especially those that enjoy travel - a multi entry visa could well be a preferred option.
