Windows 8 - File History - Unknown Error

Attached is an error message I get with "File History" in Windows 8. It used to work, but for some reason has the error message.

I have spent hours tonight searching the web for answers, with no success.

Would greatly appreciate if anyone has an answer.

The external hard drive is a WD 1TB, plenty of space, and appears to be working quite normally, except for this little problem.

Device Manager says "This device is working properly".

Can you get more information about the individual errors by clicking on them? If so, what is the difference between the "warnings" and the one "error"?

If you dont actually need the backed-up files then you could erase the drive and start again, to see if that works.

You could also try plugging it into another USB socket.

I had the same problem updated the firmware for the external drive and all backup problems solved. Had me stuffed for days trying to figure it out.

You could try the following.

1 - Unplug the external drive

2 - delete the following hidden folder: C:\Users\<profile>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\FileHistory\Configuration\Config

3 - Plug the drive back in

4 - Go to File history and reapply all settings

You have the "event ID 201" issue.

It seems File History has issues with parsing linked directories. See the above for some work arounds.

It also seems to be picky about it's own history. Bad programming not to tell the user it failed a backup.
