youngXpat
I remind everybody here that on most balconies of these hotels/condominiums , the railing is incredibly low. A foreigner is mostly taller than a Thai, let's say by at least one head taller. This leads to the rails reach only to the lower hip, so if you are a bit dizzy, smoking or phoning on the balcony and lean against the rail in a manner you would be used to on a balcony in the West, it's already to late. You would loose balance and just flip over the rail - and welcome to the Pattaya Flying Club . . .! Understand your point but c'mon, bit of common sense please! rbrooks
It is also thought he fell at around 10pm the previous night as a loud thud was heard by security guards who decided not to investigate. Excellent! I thought that was a joke until I read the whole article. Unbelievable!. The security guard actually admits to hearing a loud thud the previous night but decided not to investigate. The farang flying crashing to the ground must have the woke him up on duty then he went back to sleep. I guess we can really feel safe with Thai security beefing up their forces at the U.S. Embassy in Chiang Mai for the alleged threats from unknown sources. What will Thai security do when attacked? Run away and hide?
Semper
we all have to leave some kind of ID when obtaining a sim-card. Weird....... Not sure about sim-cards, but at least when checking in at a hotel.
lemoncake
anyone one else thinks its crazy that they want to analyze the phone, instead of searching the room to identify the person? also since he is somewhat of a mystery, why do not they treat it as a crime scene instead of "falling"? johnnycthedog
ive been sitting/standing/drunk on my 20th floor balcony for 4 months now and not even the tiniest of slips or attempts to dive off it. could i have a great sense of balance or is it because ive only had 1 woman out there with me and that 1 doesnt seem to be a psycho? I keep the door shut & never venture out there. Even looking out the window at any height makes me giddy. I think you're spot on when you refer to the company you keep on your balcony. No nut cases equals safer living.

You might find low railings such as you describe on some of the guest houses, which are usually 3-4 stories at most. I've never seen any such in the high rise hotels though. In this case, you can visit the hotel's website (Furama Jomtien Beach Hotel) and see from their room pictures for yourself exactly how high they are. I can proove you wrong on most Condominium Units here on Jomtien. And just re-read another poster a page back . . he also talks about low railings he found in said Furama. It seems to be in neglect of the ISO9001 standard. Personally I haven't been at the scene, yet, but when I was searching for a condo to buy 2 years back from now, I noticed the low railings in many locations. I am 1.85 tall and would never dare to lean against them, neither drunk nor sober . . the balcony of the condo I eventually bought had an extra railing attached. BlackPuddingBertha
Many high-rise Pattaya buildings do indeed have quite low railings on the balconies. Some are extremely low. Some are a reasonable height.
joepattaya1961
So, the unfortunate man was still falling? Wearing only boxer shorts.......carrying a mobile phone? One phone call to the provider will give the identity............we all have to leave some kind of ID when obtaining a sim-card. Weird....... Not true. I have a sim card and did not have to leave any identifying documents. I just asked for the sim and they sold it to me no questions asked. I guess it depends where you buy the card. 2 months ago.....AIS: ID requested. Because of bad service, sim cancelled and bought another one at True........ID-requested. Service as bad anyway. I guess it''s serious enough for an official govt warning. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/9476958/Warning-over-hotel-balcony-falls.html
