My passport expires in August of this year and I'm leaving for the UK on Tuesday and will be transiting KL, my return route is the same. I know that Thailand does not enforce the 6 month minimum valdity of UK passport but is there potentially an issue with KL and the transit? I can imagine that the outbound flight will be trouble free but am slightly concerned at encountering officialdom in Heathrow on my return. Anyone?

I would suggest you renew your passport in the UK while your there. It will cost the same as renewing your passport via courier to Hong kong. There is the same day service, if you phone the passport office to make an appointment while your in the UK. You could phone from here before you leave.

That's what I had in mind but the government web sites on this are not the best, there's a good description of the four hour/same day services but no mention of which form to use nor the supporting documents they require (it just says see Post Office where the application forms cannot be downloaded!). Anyone, again?

Also you will loose nothing by getting it early. They will add up to 9 months of existing time left on old passport to the new one. Info: https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport

For urgent passport issue info here: https://www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently

It appears that you would fill in the application form when you go to the passport office.

Thanks Joe, it looks like that the sensible thing to do.

BTW/correction to my OP: Thailand DOES require a minimum 6 month remaining on passports hence I have no choice.

The six month rule does not apply for most entries to Thailand. But you must have enough for the length of time needed for the permit to stay you get when entering.

For a visa to issued they require a minimum of 6 months for a single entry and 18 months for a multiple entry visa.

I was once nearly refused boarding on a BA flight as my passport was 1 day over the 6 month left requirement. It took about an hour of pleading with them to let me board. They are worried about being fined by the Thai authorities if entry is refused so are uber cautious in checking your validity before you fly.

You should not encounter any problems in KL as you are in transit home to the UK.

There should be no problems at Heathrow as you are a UK national arriving home with a valid passport.

Hope the weather does not come as too much of a shock.

I did this very thing last year. Liverpool was my local office, I was expecting it to be a nightmare, it was a breeze. Fill your form in before you go, 2 mins to check its all ok, 2 mins to collect it 4 hours later.

I was back in UK in November last year and got a new passport from Liverpool while I was there. I did the one day option. You need to make an appointment by telephone within three weeks of the date you wish to visit the office, you cannot just turn up at any passport office and get a passport. You also need to get a passport pack from a post office and have the form filled out prior to arrival at the passport office. They worked a scam on me with the photo's, the ones I used were exactly the spec. required but the officer dealing with me sent me to a photo booth they have in the office to get more (5 GB pounds for 4 pics). Here is a useful link

I remember about 10 years ago when I was married and Thai wife was told by the bank when she went to change money that her passport had expired. So she had entered Thailand on an expired Thai passport. The joke was earlier in the year she had travelled on the same expired passport.

Now we were in Thailand we were contemplating what to do so we winged it and she got out of Bangkok and as far as Helsinki before they noticed when we changed planes that the PP was out of date. At this point she showed her UK PP.

I hope they are a lot more security conscious now

Thai's can enter the country on an expired passport without any problem.

But entering another country would be of course.

Then it seems odd that they can leave on an expired passport as well.
