Teacher graduates oversupply with low-quality teachers

BANGKOK, 26 February 2013 (NNT) - Office of the Higher Education Commission has revealed that the number of graduating teachers has been increasing; but many institutions produce low-quality teachers.

The office said that this year’s intake of teaching students will subsequently produce around 240,000 new teachers in 2017, while the number of retiring teachers in the next seven years will be around 200,000. Rajabhat universities produce around 62% of teacher graduates.

The troubling concerns is that many institutions only provide teaching courses to respond to the demand; but do not consider the quality of the graduates nor the impending unemployment rate as the teachers’ number is too great.

Education Minister Phongthep Thepkanjana is asking the Office of Higher Education Commission to come up with a system to control the quality and number of teachers produce.

Teaching courses with the highest number of graduates are physical education, health education, and Thai boxing.

Q4 2012 shows lower unemployment rate, higher household debt
By English News

BANGKOK, Feb 26 - Thailand's social conditions in last year's 4th quarter saw reduced unemployment but a higher amount of household debt, particularly for vehicles, according to a state planning agency.

National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) Deputy Secretary-General Suwannee Kamman said in the 4th quarter, Thailand's unemployment rate stood low at 0.48 per cent or 190,000 persons, from 0.63 per cent year-on-year, while employment increased 1.7 per cent with 39.6 million persons employed nationwide, and mostly in the agricultural sector.

The unemployment rate stood on average at 0.66 per cent throughout 2012. The unemployment rate of those graduating in liberal arts, journalism, and information technology still ranked first at 2.2-3.8 per cent.

Ms Suwannee said the Bt300 minimum wage has not yet led to overall layoffs, but the situation must be closely monitored, for 16,900 juristic persons last year closed their businesses.

Meanwhile, she said that household debt has increased, particularly on vehicles. Despite that, default on payments has not been seen, though it must be monitored again this year.

Household savings tended to decrease, she said, while the number of households nationwide failing to save rose to 45 per cent.

The problem of teenage pregnancy also increased steeply, Ms Suwannee said. Analysis and measures are needed to tackle the problem at the local level. Instability in the labour workplace was also a factor in increasing sexual violence towards children and women, she added.

On the drug issue, she said the problem has not been successfully addressed, for only 9.7 per cent of drug addicts successfully underwent rehab and stopped their drug use behaviour. (MCOT online news)

Thai defence minister insists on meeting Cambodian counterpart at temple site
By Digital Media

BANGKOK, Feb 26 – Thai Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat flew to the northeastern border province of Si Sa Ket this morning for a lunch meeting with his Cambodian counterpart Tea Banh at the controversial Preah Vihear temple site despite a Thai Foreign Ministry’s objection.

The Foreign Ministry earlier asked the Defence Ministry to move the venue from the temple to a Surin hotel – a move which compelled the Cambodian authorities to abruptly call off the bilateral meeting.

The Thai defence minister was accompanied by several high-ranking military officers on his mission to meet with the Cambodian deputy prime minister and defence minister.

He said before boarding a plane in Bangkok that he would visit military personnel at checkpoints near the Phra Viharn (Preah Vihear) temple in Si Sa Ket province before meeting with the Cambodian delegation.

The objectives of the meeting are to find a common understanding on the temple dispute and to achieve cooperation without violence, he said, adding the he would have lunch with Gen Tea Banh at Phra Viharn.

Brushing aside the Thai Foreign Ministry’s reservations, Minister Sukumpol was reassuring that the meeting will not have a negative impact on the imminent ruling on the border dispute by the International Court of Justice.

“Don’t be too cautious,” he said, apparently referring to the Foreign Ministry’s earlier suggestion to hold the meeting in Surin. (MCOT online news)

INUNDATION
Flooding in Narathiwat is expected to spread Tuesday

The Nation

NARATHIWAT: -- Heavy rains in Narathiwat have caused the Kolok River to overflow inundating houses and agricultural land in Waeng, Tak Bai and Sungai Kolok districts.

Flash flooding from the Sankalakhiri Ridge added to the flooding in those areas, causing the water level to rise to about 3040 centimetres.

The floods forced about 60 households in Sungai Kolok municipality to evacuate to higher ground. The people have also been forced to move their vehicles to the roadside.

Traffic police set up a checkpoint to inform motorists to avoid the flooded areas.

Flooding is expected to spread to more areas as rain continued to fall at the press time on Tuesday.

BANGKOK: -- Thai Defence Minister ACM Sukampol Suwannathat on Tuesday held a meeting with his Cambodian counterpart near Preah Vihear Temple amidst concerns that Thailand is at a disadvantage over the adjacent disputed plot.

Sukampol's entourage included Gen Thanongsak Apirakyothin, permanent secretary for Defence, Gen Nipat Thonglek, deputy permanent secretary for Defence, Gen Worapong Sanganet, deputy supreme commander, Gen Udomdet Sitabut, Army chief of staff, Lt Gen Worawit Darunchu, the commander of the Border Affairs Department, and representatives of other concerned government agencies.

Sukampol met Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Tea Banh and other Cambodian officials at a location near the Preah Vihear.

A wellinformed source from the Defence Ministry said the Foreign Ministry earlier recommended Sukampol to change the meeting venue after Tea Banh invited the Thai defence minister to a luncheon meeting to discuss the border dispute at Preah Vihear.

The Foreign Ministry feared that holding a meeting there would affect the case in the International Court of Justice. Cambodia has asked the court to rule whether the ancient temple's boundary includes the plot around it, over which Thailand is claiming sovereignty.

Sukampol asked Tea Banh to meet him at the Surin Majestic Hotel instead but Tea Banh threatened to cancel the talks so Sukampol agreed to meet him at Preah Vihear, the source said.

Speaking to reporters before leaving for Cambodia, Sukampol said he would visit Thai troops stationed near the border so he would take the opportunity to hold talks with Tea Banh.

Sukampol said the meeting would be a followup to the talks between Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen. The two met at the funeral of King Sihanouk on February 4 and the two prime minister assigned their defence ministers to hold further talks.

Sukampol said the two countries should settle their land dispute through talks as their borders would remain connected forever.

He said the talks should not cause Thailand to be at a disadvantage in the case. "If we worry about being at a disadvantage, we won't be able to do anything. If we are at a disadvantage, why should I go?" Sukampol said.
