I have been living in Thailand for 18 months and working here. In my first 6 months I shipped in my personal belongings. In July this year I want to bring more goods over from Australia and the UK, this will mainly be books, toys, stuff for a school and orphanage. Do I have to pay tax on these goods? From what I have been reading, I do. All of the goods will be second hand donations.

Does anyone know if I am less likely to pay tax of I send by air cargo than sea (shipping)? When we moved here I sent my things by air cargo and my partner sent his by sea.

Thanks is advance for your feedback!

You are entitles to1 free shipment by sea/land and 1 free shipment by air, but it must be made within the first year.

Yes, you will need to pay tax, but if you have a member of the orphanage pick-up the things there is a good chance that customs will just let it through or only charge a minimal ammount.

Yep, those customs thieves will be all over it... just assume the worst and be prepared to pay the maximum. Your only alternative is to engage the services of a customs broker who might be able to ensure that the 'donations' are left relatively alone - you will have to provide all of the proof of it being donated etc. You will have to pay for their brokering services but this is worth it if they get you out of paying the tax. Also, if it all isn't really worth anything replacement wise... then insure it for the least amount possible, that will also ensure that you are not fleeced by this mafia!
