Unfortunately the canned clams that you will find are the baby clams, not the quayhogs that you really neeed to make chowder and I have never been able to find bottled calm juice. I sometimes buy the small fresh clams at the market selecting the largest avaiable and steam them to get some clam juice. I've made chowder that was not bad, but not as good as if you could get the "real" thing! Good luck and enjoy!

I buy those fresh cooked clams at Foodland almost every week to make Linguine con le Vongole - they are very good and quite inexpensive, but check the dates on the label. I believe these are "Hoy Lai" (small soft-shell clams light brown in color with the diamond pattern, hence the "Lai" I think) which might have gone unsold in the seafood case, so they get cooked/shelled for sale.
