Scams - An Oldie But A Goodie In Malaysia

Featured Replies

I think that scam may have been tried on me several years back. KL plaza some middle age guy is chatting saying his daughter is scared to go study in the states, of course after I told him him I was from the states. He talked about how young and pretty she was and invited me to their place. He wanted me to talk about the US and then play cards later. This whole thing seemed odd and something was not right for sure. I politely said no and went about my day.

If something seems odd and not right then you can bet it is not for sure, maybe it was the same scam, I think playing cards was mentioned but once again it was years ago.

May last year I was in Phnom Penh and, as per above

I had been warned by the expat owner of the hotel I was staying at as earlier that month a USA woman had been 'taken' for US$4400 by a Filipino gang.

My 'man' was doing the help the tourist act ina PP side street, a FIlipino, good English, though I didn't want/need any help. Same stuff, said where I was from, what coincidence, his sister was going there to study at uni soon, but she had a heart condition, would I like to come to lunch and tell her a little about the place . . . then (or maybe it was before) some questions about if I was happy, would being rich make me happy, did I think I was lucky, because he was lucky and said how winning big at a casino had made him very happy.

I'd had enough, and he was getting too 'close', very pushy and I kept looking for someone else as expected he had a watcher/security.

I headed somewhere more populated.

I'm no pretend-Rambo.

Travel forums have sections on it, incl Trip Advisor Phnom Penh Scam outlined has a link to the full story of the US woman - but it is now unavailable online (Phnom Penh Post - archived), so useless!, and Lonely Planet Scammers in Phnom Penh
