Easing of protection for Thai crocodiles sought

The CITES partners are expected to come to a resolution today on whether or not protection for Thai crocodiles should be lowered.

BANGKOK: -- Thai officials have been lobbying hard for protection regulations to be eased in the hope of expanding its export of crocodile products. At present, Thailand is exporting Bt3 billion to Bt4 billion worth of crocodile goods.

"This trade has not endangered crocodiles in the wild because we have so many crocodile farms," Fisheries Department's chief Wimol Jantrarotai explained yesterday.

He spoke after he and relevant officials held an informal meeting with representatives from several countries yesterday.

According to Wimol, Thailand had received good response from China, Croatia, Cambodia and several African countries, but representatives from the US did not attend the informal meeting and expressed concerns about the shrinking population of wild crocodiles.

"Though Thailand only has about 200 crocodiles in the wild, we are releasing more every year," Wimol said.

What we need is another good flood to release a few more into the wild to even up the balance a bit !!

And since it is prohibited by law, to catch and kill them and no one will ever do that and because the environment is so very well protected in Thailand...

If they want to keep exporting croc products from farmed crocs then they must be from the non Thai variety.

Therefore the Thai crocs need more protection not less.

Hmm, me thinks what else , where else, will they ease.

seems to me if they can increase the wild population rather than decrease it it is a good thing.

While they are doing this they still have a thriving business going.

What do they expect to do by protecting Crock's being raised in captivity for their products.

No different than pigs or chickens.

Seems to me the rest of the world should be considering following the Thai example here with other endangered species.

It may not be replenishing the wild stock over night but in time it will come back.

It's return may be slow but it is better than any thing else proposed here.

Rather more are escaping in the floods every year.

200 crocs in the wild, sounds like an endangered species to me. By allowing croc products to be sold legally the idiots are just giving the thias reasons to kill the last 200 for monetary gain and everyone knows money talks in Thailand. Once again we see that these idiots have no idea at all about conservation and saving endangered species.

let's just kill all wildlife, after all they shit everywhere and take up valuable space on the planet. let's not forget those trees everywhere that block my view of nature.

You all got to realize that the ones in the farms are not the Thai variety which is endangered but a different species which has been brought into the country to farm.

The ones that are being released are specially bred Thai crocs being bred to repopulate remote parts of national parks so they can hopefully increase in number by themselves.

There was another thread on this recently where it said they were isolating DNA and such so they could identify which species products for sale came from.

Believe it or not there are people in this country (Not in Govt) who are interested in conservation and looking after Thai animals.

An example is the National Park head who recently went after the fat cop and his mates caught poaching.

Remember the complaints of a crocodile in a national park anyone?

Oh isn't this a nation who just loves animals, Ha Ha Ha, just a big joke.

Let this be the venue for all conservation meetings, it's just the perfct place to hold the hub of smuggled species. DISGUSTING
