Wiring A 12V Cig Lighter Adapter To A Honda Click

Featured Replies

Im trying to use my Garmin Nuvi here in LOS, and my Nuvi has a cigarette lighter adapter for charging but I dont have a car and my Honda Click doesnt have a cigarette lighter outlet. Has anyone here wired their own and how much trouble was it to do? Ive got a decent set of tools, but I dont know where to buy an adapter.

Hi

Those adapters are available just about anywhere they have car accessories for sale.

I have seen them in Tesco and BigC as well as in those gadget stalls they have around.

If you get one that plugs into a cig lighter, as opposed to one with battery clips, you'll have to cut of the plug and connect the wires directly to the battery, or ignition switch.

Just make sure you get the Pos and Neg the right way round. The Pos will be the wire from the center contact of the plug.

Thanks Daffy.

It may be prudent to insert an online fuseholder and fuse on the positive wire from the battery/or other terminal (very cheap and easy). Some adapters may have a fuse built in. Not knowing motorcycles very well I wondered about voltage, but I believe the Click 125i is 12v - so that is okay.

got my of e bay about $12 marine version for water proof and fused then connected to the battery. Very easy

I have 9 vehicles and they all have cigarette lighter sockets on the outside of the grill or easy access. Even one on my tractor. I hook the wires to the battery with a 30 amp fuse in line to the socket. I use them for all kinds of stuff. Especially good for trickle charger, spot light etc.

Just put a connector on the wires to the battery bolts and run the wire where you need. I also use the weather proof socket to keep them clean. Smear a little silicone grease on the inside to prevent corrosion.

Someone's got to say it ...

Cigarette lighter on a motocy? Will you be fitting an ashtray too?

I don't think that is what he is looking for. He wants to actual install a cigarette lighter plug on his bike. I bought mine from a German website (got the link off a Thai-Visa post actually) and then I took it to one of those small bike mechanic shops. He installed it for me in about 5 mins. Works great!

The plug arrangement on the right is you best choice. You can easily attach it to your battery but you had better make sure the voltage and the polarity is correct. Also install an "on/off" switch. Saves the battery and prevents electrical accidents. I believe the Garmin cigarette lighter adapter plug has the circuit in it to provide the correct voltage to the GPS unit.

Thanks for all the help. I did buy one at Big C but its not waterproof, and it has a blue LED light that comes on when theres power to it. I cut the cig plug off, wired it straight to the battery, and ran the wire to the left side pocket which is large enough to hold the adapter, GPs and GPS wire/antenna. Took me around 3 minutes to realize that the Click battery is under the front cover in front of the handlebars.

Now I just need to get a switch for the adapter and somehow waterproof it more than just putting it in a plastic bag.
