Van Hire To Border Or Other Recommendations For Move Overland Cm To Siem Reap

Hi Folks,

I am relocating from Chiang Mai to Siem Reap at the end of the month for a year.

I will be going down next week to get the housing set up in advance of the real
move. I have a handle on permits for my dogs and I am reasonably confident in
the visa knowledge from all the research I have done.

What I am still trying to get a handle on is the final transportation issue
between Chiang Mai and Siem Reap for the ‘real’ move. For me a real move is 6
boxes and 4 dogs in airline crates that I MUST travel with.

My original plan was for my son, who lives in Chiang Mai, to drive it all at
least as far as the border (assuming his truck could not cross – confused
there, but now a mute point) then lug it across to a prearranged van hired on
my first trip down for the final leg into Siem Reap.

Murphy’s Law – My son’s truck is having problems.

So, here are my obvious and long-awaited questions:

Has anyone done a similar overland move in either direction?

Does anyone know of any only half crazy van services or… I can hire on either
or both sides of the route?

How is this done?

Genuine advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, where is the absolute coldest beer in Siem Reap for after I survive this?

Thanks in advance!

Nola

PS. Folks who know me, please do not comment about my impending move on my Facebook page. I prefer to keep the
family feedback to a minimum until after it is done.

Check with Northern motors outside the moat on the east side of the old city towards the North corner.

They rent vans and I believe drivers. Not sure if that is what you want but give them a try. Sounds like it is not going to be cheap as the Van would have to come back.

Good Luck

No need to photograph it. My youngest son (48 today) has pictures of every rock there. It is actually an area of about 70 square kilometers more than you could take in with the three day pass.

My last trip there I noticed how many could speak English but couldn't understand it.

Enjoy your stay there.

I recently spent a year living/teaching there (PP and Kampot) and, whilst there, met someone who had moved from CM to PP.

He rented a pickup+driver to get him from CM to the border. At the border, he transferred his boxes to some guys with push-carts who then took them just inside the Cambodian side where he already had a pickup+driver waiting to take them to PP. I think he also had to pay a small amount of 'tea-money' at one of the custom posts.

Allow 2 days in total as, due to opening/closing times at the borders, he spent the first night in a g/h at the Thai border and paid extra to the pickup driver to sleep in the cab overnight.

He did make some enquiries with a number of airlines and got some very interesting 'tempting' quotes, but, for security reasons, decided to accompany the baggage himself.

I bought some land whilst there, and plan on returning someday.

p.s they have the BEST 12-month visa in the world....good luck with the move.

You nailed it! I need a rest from the visa roulette game, at least for a couple years until I turn 50. Even now, it took me 3 tries and 6 hours this morning just to get my re-entry visa to go down and rent a house in advance next week, but I had to be sure I could get back in long enough to get my things. Also your friend's mix of rides on both sides and hand truck (or 3) at the border is what I came up with. It is reassuring to know someone else has undertaken this adventure. Thanks for that!
