Tourist Visa For A Nigerian. I've Got Questions!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm a Nigerian studying in the UK and planning to visit Southeast Asia this Summer. I hope to visit Thailand, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia within the space of two months. I intend to fly in to Bangkok from Heathrow, spend about 4 weeks there, 2 weeks in Malaysia and the remaining 2 weeks split between Laos and Cambodia. I'm required to apply for Tourist visas from my country of residence for Thailand and Malaysia and can get visas upon entry for Laos and Cambodia. My questions are:

Is there a way to put in my application, ensuring i get double or multiple entry for Thailand. I intend buying a return ticket and would need to be back in Bangkok to catch my flight back to the UK or is just stating how many days i would be in Thailand for and paying for a multiple entry visa enough?

Is it wise to buy my ticket even before i apply and get my visa? Will securing my accommodation before that help my case? I plan to stay in hostels and i think would need to fill in an address on my application form. Can i just book a hostel for a week or the duration of my trip so there's an address to fill in on my form?

What do you think is the most ideal itinery? I'm not particular on the first country i get to from here though Bangkok seems to be the hub for most travelers going to SEA.

Is Hull the best place to put in my application? I read somewhere that it takes about 30 minutes to process tourist visas there. I sent them an e-mail but i'm yet to get a reply from them. I guess i'm asking if its possible to put in my application and wait for my visa. I don't live in any of the cities where the Thailand consulate is located so i would have to travel to put in my application. If i can apply and wait to get it that day, that would be ideal.

waiting in anticipation for your replies. Thanks guys!

I don't think Hull can issue your visa. It appears you can apply at the embassy in London.

There is no multiple entry tourist visa only by number of entries. It appears that you would need a double entry according to your travel plans.

Get a double entry tourist visa, or since you mention you will in region for two months, a single entry might suffice.

If you can get a tourist visa, the will give you a sixty day on entry, then then when you want to move on to malaysia, do a re entry permit which will allow you a re entry based on the existing visa in your passport.

One tourist single entry visa should be OK.

If you don't have your flights booked already, then you could first fly to Malaysia, then do Laos and Cambodia, and finally Thailand, where you could get the normal 28 day visa on arrival at the airport. That way you don't have to worry about tourist visas or whatever.

He has a nigerian passport. Wrong suggestion. Get a tourist visa in London.

4. For a Nigerian students studying in a country where a Thai Embassy/ Consulate-General is situated,
application for a visa shall be made at the Embassy or
Consulate-General in that country with no requirement of Clearance
Certificate issued by N.D.L.E.A in Nigeria, provided that the
following conditions are met:

  • studying in the country
  • residing in the country where the applicant studying without leaving
from that country for a certain period of one year at the minimum
  • holding a re-entry visa to that country
  • wishing to travel to Thailand for educational purposes only

What is purpose of your visit ?

If your visa is approved you may be given only 1 month single tourist visa as nigerian are quite concerned here in Thailand for their crime mostly from drug offence and scam.

Hi, I'm replying from my mobile and will try to answer all questions. I'm going as a tourist. I don't know anybody in any of the four countries I'm going to and will do it solo. I know the reputation my country has in Thailand and I sincerely hope it doesn't affect my application. Laos and Cambodia are both visa upon entry for my nationality but Thailand and Malaysia requires me to apply for a tourist visa from my country of Residence. Which should I apply for first? I'm not particular about where I land in but I'm planning to spend the most part of my holiday in Thailand. Also, is a return ticket necessary? I'm asking cos I don't know where would be ideal to land in first bearing in mind that I would need to go back to same country to catch my flight back to the UK. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Also if I'm given one month single entry, can I use that to leave for another country AND come back in to Thailand to catch my flight home or is the single entry just solely for entering Thailand from my country of residence? That's all I'm after really. Knowing I can visit Thailand, visit some neighbouring countries and get back in to board a flight back home.

Wow. Thanks for both links. I don't see myself applying for visas for four countries. Thailand and Malaysia are proving a hard nut to crack already as per tickets and length of stay. I guess it'll be just Thailand and Malaysia. I intend to fly into one country, travel and tour within that country, take a train to the other country, tour same country and go back home. Should I get a one way ticket or a return ticket? If someone could tell me what to do about tickets, I would appreciate it. Should I buy, say a one way ticket to Thailand and a train ticket to Malaysia, then a ticket to Heathrow from Malaysia or vice versa. That way I won't have to be concerned about the number of entries I get. What do you guys think? Appreciate all your responses and links. Cheers

You need to have a two way ticket to apply for the initial visa for Malaysia and Thailand.

what does a two way ticket mean? I stumbled on an info that suggests I can only get into Malaysia via air. I don't know if that's for those coming in from Nigeria or just everybody with a Nigerian passport. That being said, I might have to fly from Heathrow to Malaysia and then go by land to Thailand and then get a flight from Bangkok to the UK. So I might need to get a one way ticket for both countries. What do you think?

You may find that securing a Thai tourist visa as a Nigerian National is neither easy or straight-forward. You may have to apply in person to the Thai embassy in London. The following link may be of assistance. I would advise against booking/paying for flights until you have secured a visa

Per above, there are stricter controls for Nigerian nationals.

Per above, there are stricter controls for Nigerian nationals.

For good reason too.

Almost all EU EMB & Cons. have the rule for Nigerians to only go to UK THai embassy only , who seems to be specially to handle Nigerian applications

Think you'll find it too problematic getting into Thailand, if I were you I'd leave Thailand off your itinerary.

You will get a single entry tourist visa for thailand n malaysia, so book london to Kl(malaysia) then Bkk(thailand) to london. You can enter thailand by land from malaysia. You cannot get a re entry permit on a single entry tourist visa.

why would he?

thanks. This was exactly what i decided yesterday only that i'm thinking of getting a cheap ticket from Malaysia to Bangkok. Just to prove i have every intention of leaving to another country at the end of my visit in Malaysia. I was wondering if they won't ask questions about the ticket to Bangkok seeing as won't have a Thailand visa when i put in my application. I'm doing the Malaysian visa first. Thoughts? Thanks for your response.

You can get re-entry permit on any entry stamp.

What does single entry mean?

Tourist visas are issued by the number of entries (max of 3) you pay for when you get the visa.

Each entry gives you a 60 day permit to stay when you enter the country. So a single entry would only give you one entry into the country good for 60 days.

He did ask: "if I'm given one month single entry, can I use that to leave for another country AND come back in to Thailand to catch my flight home?" I think the answer is yes.

You use the single entry to visit Thailand, then leave. Later on, you're just passing through (in a transit status) to get home. Since you won't be clearing customs/immigration on that 2nd stop then no visa is needed. You will not be able to enter Thailand per se, but you will be able to catch your connecting flight. Just make sure you have the printed itinerary to show the ticket agent at the point where you board your first flight that day.

But that is not what he asked - he asked if he could use the same visa for entry two times and that would require a re-entry permit or a two entry visa. He did not say anything about a 12 hour or less transit stay at airport.
