Police chief launches moral crusade against gambling

BANGKOK, 26 March 2013 (NNT) - The police commander-in-chief has announced a moral crusade against gambling and other "vices".

Police Commander-in-Chief Pol. Gen. Adul Sangsingkaew said that he had ordered senior police officers across the country to crack down on gambling dens and places of other "vices".

He said that if police in any area failed to comply with the order, senior police officers responsible for the area would be removed from office.

The police chief's statement came one day after four senior Metropolitan police officers were removed from their posts following a crackdown on gambling dens in areas under their responsibility.

Gambling is illegal in Buddhist-dominated Thailand. But underground gambling dens are known to be pervasive, and several high-ranking government officials--as well as some political heavyweights-- own casinos at the borders with Cambodia and Myanmar.

To be perfectly frank, any reasonably intelligent newspaper reporter would ask, "Should I report this, because in doing so, surely that gives the owners of the gambling dens a tip off..."

As for other vices, prostitution is illegal, so he should have it all cleaned up in about 5 years.

If you see police on the scene then 1.) in uniform means officially on site to investigate, 2.) out of uniform is under cover in a sting operation, 3.) playing as private person, 4.) just visiting the loo, 5.) lost

That being the case I would have thought the Jihad would have had houses of ill repute as the main focus. With other vices secondary.

A "moral crusade" initiated in a country where most moral considerations are often little more than face-saving window dressing and frequently thrown out of the same is a sure recipe for success. Not.

Oh please stop it, a crackdown on gambling and other "VICES" No more gambling corruption and prostitution in Thailand. The money they recieve goes straight to the police and up to the top.

My friend owns a ligitmate business (Thai person) and every single month she gets a visit (and her business nieghbours) from the BIB for the monthly 1,500 baht protection payment. Her monthy costs depend on her annual takings and the BIB demand to inspect her tax receipts.

Dear Commander in Chief. Ask your self a simple question as to what is the bigger issue - gambling or corruption? I hope this helps to clear a path as to the decisions you make...

Muslim? Fair enough then things might actually get done. Gambling, corruption, homosexuality, and prostitution are definately totaly forbiidin under islam. Might actually see something done

Just pointing out a bit of detail. Take your point, but it's his adherence to the Thai Constitution together with enforcing the Thai Criminal Code. When he gained office in July 2012 he made a number of statements, including on how he was going to crack down on corruption, especially within the RTP. Let's see if he has the determination and especially support within the chain of command to do so, questionable, but you can only hope for someone to start making a difference.

EDIT: As always in Thailand will also depend if he can survive political interference. He has already been attacked by DSI, he won the first round
