I was on a non o ( based on marriage) then had the extension of stay.

My school was told by the Teachers' Council of Thailand to change over to a B visa.

3 months ago, I told them my work permit will expire at the end of April. I will need to take the

Thai Culture and Ethics course. Then I will get the papers I need from the Teachers' Council.

Then the people at who issue the work permits will extend my work permit. With the extended

work permit, then I can extend my B visa.

Anyway, this is just a two day course, I said to them to get me signed up asap and it would

be done.

Needless to say week after week of leads to D-day and they still haven't been able to get

this organized. Here is my problem, in 1 month the B visa is set to expire. I need a work permit,

but they way things are I can't get a teachers licence until I take this course.

Since, I have 400,000 Baht sitting in a bank account untouched for the past year can I

apply for a extension of stay based on marriage within Thailand or do I have to apply for

a brand new visa?

I'm not a teacher but my work permit was done on a non-O Visa extension of stay.

Maybe they are not sure of the rules, it is apparently easier to get a work permit if you supporting Thai family.

I would not recommend you switch to B from an O visa because it is my understanding that if you lose your job, you got 7 days to leave Thailand, if you decide to give up teaching for a while, you visa status is unaffected and you can continue to renew based on the 400K in the bank.

On a B extension, as noted above, you are required to leave when your job ends - for whatever reason.

The 7 days would require you to get an extension, not automatically given as years ago. You have to apply for it.

The options to that would be to apply for a regular years extension based on marriage, or for those without the money in place, a 60 day extension to visit the spouse. Either one would have to be done promptly to avoid overstay, but hopefully you'd see the 'end' coming and make plans for it.

I forgot to mention that I still have another full year of employment on my contract.

The school knew I was going to encounter difficulties extending my work permit. I've warned them about the problems 3 months in advance, they couldn't get their act together.

The way I see it,I'll have to get a short term visa and take the Thai culture course. The school will have

to send me back to Laos and get a new visa over again.

Always depends on your local Immigration Dept, but it should be fine if you can show the 400,000 for the required period along with all the other paperwork.

This kind of Extension of Permission to Stay should be ok to extend your Work Permit (again depends on your Local Labour Dept).

Go to Labour with a Thai speaker and check that this will be ok.

Keep on pressing your employer to get the paper work sorted, but do note as had already been posted that an Extension of Permission to Stay based on Working in the Kingdom of Thailand will end the day your employment ends.
