BANGKOK: -- Bangkok Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra has now appointed his four deputies. Together, they are expected to help run the capital over the next four years.

The new deputy Bangkok governors are Jumpol Sampaopol, who recently resigned as deputy Bangkok City clerk, former assistant national police commissioner General Assawin Kwanmuang, Democrat party-list MP Pusadee Tamtai, and a former executive of Krungthep Thanakom, Amorn Kitchawengkul.

Jumpol previously held important posts including permanent official of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). He was also head of the Public Works Department and designed Bangkok's road network.

Assawin rose to prominence in the police. But, he was also named an outstanding father in 2010.

Pusadee was an adviser to Apirak Kosayodhin at the time he served as city governor. She is also a two-time Democrat MP.

Amorn was a former board member of the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology and the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion. His latest job was with Krungthep Thanakom, the legal investment arm of BMA.

After officially announcing his deputies, Sukhumbhand yesterday vowed to push ahead quickly with his election policies. Among them is a plan to install 27,000 security cameras before the end of this year, increasing lighting in the capital, and lowering BTS fares for the Bang Chak to Bearing route, as well as BRT fares.

According to a poll conducted by Bangkok University, 64 per cent of people wanted Sukhumbhand's city officials to prioritise the installation of more CCTV security cameras and to increase city lighting. The survey covered 1,152 people aged 18 years and over between last Friday and last Sunday.

Of those questioned, 43 per cent called for an urgent move to lower BTS and BRT fares.

Some 42 per cent wanted the BMA to improve garbage-collection to ensure no garbage is left after trucks move on.

Sukhumbhand said yesterday he would co-ordinate with the Metropolitan Electricity Authority to install lighting systems at about 10,000 more spots in the capital before the end of this year.

"We will survey risky spots and plan more lighting," he said.

He expected the BTS fare for the Bang Chak-Bearing route to drop from May 17. He said a reduction of BRT fares would be discussed with the Transport Ministry soon.

As Bangkok people like BRT prices to drop, reduction seems a good policy and I'm sure the Transport Ministry will be happy to work seamlessly with the governor and BMA to implement this good policy :-)

BTW I only use BRT from Satorn to 4-Nararam3 and 5-WatDan v.v. (10 Baht one way), fully packed during rush hour. If 10 Baht is considered too much, one may start to wonder again about those HSR links
